"end of 2017"? You might be on to something:
Houlihan, 1500 and 5000 m progression
2013 4:13.64 16:15.85 age 20
2014 4:10.89 16:11.63 age 21
2015 4:09.62 15:49.72 age 22
2016 4:03.39 15:06.14 age 23
2017 4:06.22 15:00.37 age 24
2018 3:57.34 14:34.45 age 25 5000 m American Record
2019 3:54.99 15:15.50 age 26 1500 m American Record
2020 4:02.37 14:23.92 age 27 5000 m American Record, popped for roids
(and banned from January 2021 - 2025)
Reaching for the stars...
Been looking for someone to do this. Thx. I'm going to discount 2013-2015 since she was still an NCAA athlete at the time.
4:03 in your first year as a pro to 4:06 in your second, and then a low 3.57 in 2018 is narsty. 14:34 in her third year as a pro. Huge improvement.
Now, I'd be interested to see progression in other athletes... Courtney had her huge breakout in 2017, and shaved a couple seconds off the following year for the AR. But for the next two years she was stagnant, and then in 2021 had another breakout. But that was in the 3K. Emma has been around 9:02 for five years. Jenny broke 4 flat in college, and over time, brought it down to a 3:57.2 at her peak in 2014.
Progression is a funny thing. there is no right and no wrong way to improve over time. But the things that stand out about Shelby for me is:
1. she's one of the rare athletes (Sifan Hassan is another that comes to mind....) who puts a LOT on her legs and doesn't ever seem to tire. 10k usa cross (win) mile and 2 mile indoors a week later (win and runner up).
2. Always running 5k 15 double at USAs since 2018...she's won both in 2018 and 2019.
3. Just an endless reserve. ok 15 flat to 14:34 AR is a HUGE PR. But to bring it down again after a couple of years to 14:23? And then close that in a sixty flat???? 4:03. 39 in 2016 to 3:57.34 two years later is another huge improvement. But again, not done. 2019 saw a 3:54.99. Just beastly.
Whether it's Sifan Hassan or Lance Armstrong, or on a smaller scale Shelby--reckless dominance breeds suspicion. I wonder what Katie Flood or any of the old Iowa brass from her high school days think when they see her....remarkable progression.
