Like I said. I've got no desire. I ran 4 years of D1 track and cross country. I competed and trained with an against national champions and Olympians and that was sufficient for me. And like most college runners, I moved on to a family, a career and some hobby joggin' after college. The guys I ran with who were All Americans, national champs, etc. were pretty much head and shoulders above any of these ultra guys. Just because you run distances that nobody cares about does not make you a great athlete. Ultras are for the masters of the long, slow distance days that enjoy living a hermit lifestyle.
Does their coach sit down with them at some point and say, "Hey, I know you're not fast enough to keep up with the real runners on the speed days, but you are the champ of the LSD days. How about you be honest with yourself and cut out all the intervals and just do LSD days as a form of competition." The 50K world record is about 42 minutes beyond the marathon record. (If you look at the differential, it breaks down to about 5 more miles at 8:24 mile pace). If you think that Kipchoge couldn't absolutely obliterate the 50K record (after running 26.2 in 4:38 mile pace), you are out of your mind. He could do a 5 mile cool down run and still beat the 50K record.
