To answer this question you have to ask who's effort, time and money is going to "waste"
The effort mostly on the part of the coaches and runners... they are to a certain degree "living the dream" even if it means living in a house packed with sweaty balls (or ovaries).
Time: same people, coaches and athletes.
Money: shoe companies... this is the real question. One thing worth noting is that it is easier for shoe companies to pay for 1 or 2 coaches, a house or two and facilities all in one central location for 10-20 athletes than it is to pay 20-30 thousand a year salary for those athletes as individuals. Its like they are buying runners at costco rather buying them one at a time. Every once in a while you will get an olympian / w.c. qualifier and in the mean time you have these teams go to High school meets, host clinics, have a High School camp and you take care of a great deal of the grass roots stuff while paying next to nothing. There's not much money in running, but there might be enough to justify the current influx of teams.
Don't get me wrong though, these groups are great for the sport. I wish that our sport was lucrative enough that the hansons/otc guys could be paid better but in the mean time they should be very thankful for simply being able to live the life of a pro runner.
