This aged very poorly.
This is a fun thread to look back on in hindsight. And even with hindsight, people continue to disprespect Mo Farah.
2016, he drops a 52.8, coming off a 59, after he led for more than 5 laps, to win in 13:03. 2:23 final k. Near 80 degrees in Rio. everybody throwing elbows the last two laps. That was an all-time great performance.
Dude, Jakob hadn’t lost a 5k in years and he’s won two straight world championships in the event. You must be the most ignorant poster here if you think he can’t beat Cheptegei, when in fact he’s undefeated against him.
It’s funny to think that since 2021 when the strongest and best 10K runner in a sub-13 race won beating the 1500/5000 guys (Katir, Knight), we’ve seen completely ill-advised slow races with the speedier guys beating the strength guys. The Ethiopians I guess didn’t medal in 2021 either (though their guys in the race stunk).
You’re missing the fact that the speedier guys aren’t much weaker than the strength guys. Too fast to out-kick in a slow race, too strong to run away from in a fast one, at least in a championship setting.
Of course in Jakob’s case you have someone who can run 3:27 and probably sub 12:40 based on what we’ve seen, so there’s simply no counter.
No scholarship limits anymore! (NCAA Track and Field inequality is going to get way worse, right?)
