He's still on the start list for the slow heat, which starts at 7:50.
Bump. It's 7:50

Spencer is a DNS.
Also he hasn't logged anything on his Strava this week. Could he be injured again? Or did Brooks drop him?

But there's nothing else this year you'd need them for, so $30 to see The Athlete Special flame out.
Our homie was a DNS :( good thing you didn't light $30 on fire.
As an Iowa state guy, it makes me so happy to see Festus Lagat run 1:44.47. probably the fastest time by an ISU runner...ever? Even post collegiate.

Just saw his DNS, that's lame. He could very well be injured again. I thought the whole point of Brooks signing him was so he could make videos about his experience with the Beasts? He only makes 1 or 2 videos a month now, so there's hardly any point to the contract then.

Spencer - Keep the dream alive! Don't just get a job and go to work like the rest of us lemmings..
You can get a job and still train 1.5-2 hours per day. Two days of workouts where you might be practicing for two hours, a long run where you might run for 90-100 minutes. Then some easy running days where you only run about an hour, and a couple days where you lift weights for 45 minutes. Plenty of time for a job. He doesn't have kids, so what else is he spending his time on? Get a job and continue to train a couple hours per day.
Ostrander DNS as well.
His time with the beasts has definitely been disappointing from a performance standpoint, but he's had his fair share of setbacks. If I am Brooks I would give him one more year to hit some solid times. Spencer seems like a good dude who works hard. But, I could also see Brooks not renewing his contract based on this year. Unfortunately, the times he's put up won't pay the bills. Guess we will see what he does next. But, you can work a full time job and still be competitive so its not necessarily the end for him!
If I were Brooks I'd just give him free gear. That might be all they've done to this point, however. If that's the case, and I were Brooks, I'd forget to ship stuff now and then.
All press is good press.
+1
I assume the performances likely will not yield him another year on contract, but I’m rooting for the guy. Hope brooks gives him another shot, or that he keeps training/documenting.
His being with brooks has worked on me from a marketing standpoint at least. I found myself rooting for ribbich, wynne, and kidder at the trials just because I recognized them. Also rooting for Kerr at olympics. Is that just me?
i already was a pretty loyal brooks customer for shoes at least. i just like to see someone who is kind of a borderline-national class guy get a shot at the pros. i know he has underperformed, but how many spencer brown equivalents (in terms of rough national ranking) are warming the bench in the NFL? probably quite a few. i get that the NFL has a lot more money, but i think this kind of exposure for the pro side of running is good and should be encouraged.
and all that said, our sad excuse for pro running in this country where you basically have to run fast enough (or social media clout, or whatever) for a shoe company to carve out something from their marketing budget to pay you a $50K salary is very dumb. brooks should have him work on some more formal marketing projects for brooks while they also give him enough of a schedule to keep training. could be a little different model for the pro side of the sport.
It helps if he can get to the starting line and maybe race once in a while, DNS is not a good look. Running fast would also be a good thing, do you think everyone should get a medal? Gotta earn it, nothing is free.
It is kinda sad the more you think about it, you young guys think he deserves a pro contract because he has a social media following, no wonder the Kenyans kick our ass.
Spencer has been steadily declining since moving to Boulder. There, though, there was somewhat of a dynamic going on, and the crossover from all the collegiate training groups in Boulder during early Covid times helped with his viewership.
But on of his problems was that Ari was faster than he is, and Ari was smart enough to pull the plug for another escapade (triathlons).
They're all trust funders, I suspect, so whether or not Brooks is part of this is irrelevant. This will end when it ends, which seems to be right around the corner.

Identical experience for me. Their athletes pop off the startlists/results pages for me now.
i really like your very original anti-millenial strawman so let's run with it. if the salary for these pros just comes out of brooks' marketing budget, wouldn't a 3:39 guy with a bunch of social media clout be more valuable than a 3:35 guy with none? if the whole point of these pro teams is brand exposure/selling shoes, then you would take more into consideration than just PRs. that said, your point about his constant injuries and DNSs is valid. that and the fact that he's not doing many videos is not doing brooks any favors. i still think he's getting chump change from them at most and we don't need to cry for them.
Hold up, Chris Royster won the 100M in 10.11, and then doubled back to lead the 800M before a DNF. Was he a pacer?? Can anyone explain?
