Going into my senior year of HS. Prs of sub 9:50 and 2:06 (4:41 1600m from soph year- didnt race a good one last season). Coach is extremely speed oriented, even in XC. Over the past four weeks I've build up mileage, now at 48ish mpw this week . Was planning on holding this for the next four weeks into our season, and then maybe dipping down to mid-to-low 40's, if our speed workouts allow for enough mileage. I'm a big proponent of not doing mindless miles just for the sake of mileage, but I feel like I need the aerobic base before xc. However, last season I ran sub 9:50 off around 30mpw with no tempos, and 3-4 workouts a week (we did like 2 long runs the entire season, during spring break). I know my body responds well to tempos and speed (speed especially). I don't need the mileage, but I feel like I need the base. Currently doing 1-2 workouts a week, like a hilly 3 mile tempo. What should I do? Keep mileage high, do only 1 real workout a week, and hope that I don't get injured/ burnt out on higher mileage? Or do I drop the mileage to 40-45ish, and have more quality workout sessions, 2 times a week, plus a long run. So on the fence about it right now- especially with my coach doing a lot of Lactate threshold and faster work during the season. I want to PEAK IN EARLY NOVEMBER!! Let me know!
