Do we know his contract?
Really unfortunate contracts are kept secret in this sport.
It does a disservice to the sport.
Surprised he didn’t go with the shoe company that helped him run 3:34.
yeah he doesn't want to be associated with the best middle distance runner in the country who is suspended for doping... Smart!

Hobbs didn't give up college for $50k a year + bonuses (NAU already had a scholarship for him, no doubt). It's got to be much more than that.
Agreed. The US Supreme Court ruling will basically help football, basketball and maybe soccer and baseball players. There is little in XC. Honestly he needs to get in Diamond League and race there not college. My only wish is he got to train with Ingerbrigsten group. Seems like they know how to train 1500 phenoms.
I think he should have waited for Nike because of the spikes. I think making the team would have increased his value and the shoes make making the team more probable. But if he misses the team his value drops so in that case signing early hedges his bets. Catch22 but with 4 years of salary instead of 4 years living off dorm food, I wonder if Webb would have signed if he came out of HS in an Olympic year?
Wonder if they let him keep his current regimen or make him use theirs.
Maybe not. AZ has a NIL law and the NCAA is working on one. This would be great for track---kid gets paid and can still run in college.

You guys really need to get a life. Why would Kessler become a pro runner? What a sad life that would be. Kessler wants to go to college, be part of a team, get a degree and then find a career. Maybe he'd like to be a teacher, like his mother. Maybe he'd like to be an engineer. Northern Arizona is going to pay him well. He's not going to go pro.
Let's think about it. Go to college where your scholarship pays for tuition and housing and you net $0. Or, get a $50k base salary with an additional housing stipend and a travel budget to travel the world.
And NAU will not pay him extra money. NAU is not a big athletic school generating hundreds of millions of dollars like the SEC schools.
Some shoe contracts in the past have included paying for education.

No, but NIL rights legislation could allow him to sign with adidas and still run in college if NCAA can figure out in the next few weeks how to work it out. (Not that they have no had long enough already.)
After Mary Cain, no responsible parent would let their kid sign with Nike.

Going to college did not hurt Rupp or Brazier.
Also, it will be interesting to see how the new ruling affects athletes in non-revenue sports.

Assuming the Drew Hunter $100k for ten years is true (which, who tf knows), I can’t imagine Kesslers isn’t at least 150 a year. Unless the nature of contracts has tightened up, it’s got to be significantly more.
I hope adidas expect/promote some structure this time around so we don’t have another Tinman situation. Hopefully he sticks with Ron.

It may be a real balancing thing where Phil Knight can specifically donate to Oregon TF and XC and allow them to out compete NAU financially. It is one thing to allocate scholarships to distance and quite another to compensate athletes. I don't know if there is a sugar daddy for sprints or field events out there. But no one can predict how super rich alums with pet sports can upset the balance of power in niche sports.
So his coach is Warhurst but he’s going to live and train with Smith’s team. This doesn’t seem well thought out.
The U.S. has the #1 system of higher education in the world by far.

Great point! Maybe he will be able to compete for NAU!
When will adidas have an official team in the USA? (They may already and I’m just not too educated) Think about it though, Bryce hoppel and Hobbs Kessler training together 👀
So who will he actually be training and working out with? Will Mike Smith just let him hop in with the boys or something?
