Career-twilight Mary Decker Slaney?
40 year old Regina Jacobs?
Nobody else is really coming to mind. Galen of course came “close” but was never sanctioned. Others who were busted recently are mostly relative nobodies like Christian Hesch, Kevin Castille, Mo Trafeh.
Is that why it’s so hard for some LetsRunners to accept? Is it basically unprecedented?
Personally, this has come as big news to me and has been on my mind a lot.
As an Iowan who ran in three State Track Meets with her from ‘08-‘10, I’ve always been astonished by her development into the fastest in U.S. history.—it seemed surreal. So, too, does her drug sentencing (which I believe to be warranted and valid 100%).
I remember watching a FloTrack interview with her after some Drake Relays race ca. ~2009 in which she stated unblinkingly that her long-term goal was to win Olympic gold, and I remember telling my coach and teammates how naive and foolish that made her look. As the years went by, I’d come to see my harsh judgement vs. her incredible success as some kind of cosmic lesson. I started thinking—that “foolishness,” or unerring confidence in oneself, is in fact exactly what it takes to rise to the level of Olympic medalist.
Of course, I think her singleminded determination to be an Olympic gold medalist is ultimately what led to her taking nandrolone, as well.
I couldn’t find the FloTrack interview I was thinking of, but this one is interesting as well:

Anyway, back to my title question. Anyone got a top 3 they’d like to offer? Until someone enlightens me, I’m thinking:
1. Shelbo
... (gap) ...
2. Decker-Slaney
3. Jacobs
