It looks like all of the people posting here have spent some serious time in Portland to come up with these opinions.
No way they would form their opinion based on a tv show or select news articles.

oh right. Portland is doing just swell
😂😂
Declined from where? It never really ascended. Portland is a medium-sized city that has always been completely within the sphere of influence of Seattle. It’s never been relevant in the national hierarchy, let alone internationally. It’s not even a gamma city. GaWC classifies it below a gamma minus (self-sufficiency) along with its peer group including Des Moines, Buffalo, Oklahoma City and Omaha.
Having a few coffee houses and brew pubs does not make a city relevant. Where are the international connections, the ability to attract venture and foreign capital and international immigrants. Where are the world class universities, medical centers and cultural institutions? Where is the hub airport? No one that wanted to make money in technology, finance, advertising, consulting… ever said “I really need to move to Portland”.
What makes a city relevant is its ability to create wealth. Think Detroit in the 1920s, the Bay Area in the 1990s and Austin/Houston/Dallas in the last decade. LA and SF are on a completely different level from Portland and completely different types of cities so there is no point in comparing them. I just don’t get conservative's obsession with a 3rd tier city that was never really relevant in the first place, except for to a few hipsters.

This +100. Whenever I drive north from the Bay Area on I-5, Portland is just an annoying little bump in the road, whose traffic I have to survive on my way to my final destination in Seattle or Vancouver.

So, you’ve been there?

Lived in Portland throughout the pandemic and ran daily without a mask, no one ever yelled at me.
Don’t believe everything you hear.
No, it's true. I have a friend there who said the virtue signalers are crazy right now. Dirty looks and yelling for being maskless.

I hear the virtue signaling with masks is insane in Portland right now. People are yelling at you for not wearing a mask outdoors- even if you're fully vaccinated.
Probably the same is happening in California and other hippy pockets of the country. It's ironic they want to espouse following science, but when the CDC makes a science based recommendation they turn a blind eye. Those people are crazy.
Not too much of a sheep, are you? baaaahaaaa
Was it in 2017 that the GOP stopped dominating politics in Portland?
We’ve lived in Portland since 2012. Never once during the pandemic did I wear a mask while running, although I had one with me if I neared any people. There are lots of suburbs here and we rarely go downtown unless it’s to go to a concert or sporting event, although we have done a fair bit of running on the waterfront.
I’ve never seen these huge piles of needles that you speak of. Sure there are lots of homeless folks and random junkies, but none of them have ever given me a problem. I do know of a few others who have had run ins with them.
It’s nice to hear that Portland is finally going to start removing some unauthorized homeless camps and try to clean things up. The city has been too lenient. There are lots of options available and a lot of people simply choose not to take advantage of them. Mental health and addiction are both major issues among the homeless population here.
I still love the city and the running scene here is second to none. I love being close to the ocean and having access to a major airport. There aren’t a lot of other American cities that I’d rather live in.
You ever been to the South? Incredibly friendly, and far more diverse than most people would imagine.

The nightly riots have 15% less arson than at this time last year!

Well, in 2021 it ranks 66th on the list of most desirable cities according to the Urban Land Institute. In 2017 it was ranked 3rd. I don't think it is a coincidence that we see news about riots and increased homelessness, anecdotes from people and survey research showing that the city has dramatically declined. I am sure it's still a relatively nice place to be in some areas, but definitely not the place it once was. If it is anything like Los Angeles, which was a sh!thole when I went and I was in the nice tourist areas, I can see why Portland has gained its reputation.
Was it in 2017 that the GOP stopped dominating politics in Portland?
No, but cities like Portland, Minneapolis, etc have gone from reasonable center-left to full-on left-wing activist in recent years.
Pretty much my take on it too.
I live a bit more central to you, I’m in Goose Hollow. I’m walking distance to downtown but I never go, I don’t have reason to go. It was the same when I lived in Dallas. I was close to downtown but I rarely went there.
You’re right about the mental health and addiction issues amongst the homeless. I’d also add that a bunch of them have government issued military backpacks or clothes. Many our vets with PTSD also. I hope they find the help they need.
Okay, whatever low status Portland was prior to last 2 years, it has declined even further from.
Oh and in that episode of Portlandia that someone posted where they’re running the marathon I’m on the start line next to them on the far left in the dark grey shirt.

I’ve been all over the south, I’m a proud Texan. I’d pick Oregon over any of it.

So in 2017 when Portland was ranked 3rd most desirable city it was also Democrat run. Got it.

Yep. Then the looney wing really took over.

Which candidates in Portland won election in 2017 to cause such significant change?
Also who were the elected Democrats prior to that that deserve so much credit for the cities success up to that point?
It's funny how the only people that care about what happens in Portland are the alt-rights. They are the right-wing version of the SJWs - always obsessed about what crazy things the liberals are doing. No one else cares about Portland if they don't live there.
