I think the patriotism takes over here!
Centro has not won a race against the top runners since Rio 2016!
Last time he won a DL 1500m was London 2018 where Timothy, Manangoi, Filip and Jakob were absent.
There has been many occasions in the last years where Centro had a chance to take pace from the faster runners but even so he was not able to hang on to finish fast. See fore example the Bowerman miles in 2018 and 2019, DL Monaco 2017 and 2018 and the 1500m final in Doha 2019.
So why should he be better now where he has turned 31?
Centro has never beaten a top runner in a race outside of a Championships. Not even leading up to his Olympic win.
But he has placed top four in four Championships- 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2016.
And placed 8th in 2017 and 2019.
So, he's made 6 finals.
He has the advantage of knowing how to run these races while others often under perform.
Why think he can be better now?
For one, the fact that he ran the 5000 in 13 flat a couple years ago. He's gotta be stronger.
But that 1500 over the weekend was the best he has ever looked in May.
I don't think he will have one of the top 3 times in the world this year. He never has. But if he is fit, I trust that he will peak better and race better than any of his competition.
He can't beat the top guys if they run well. But the big stage messes with people's heads.
