1. FAST Start (Prefontaine)
Pros:
- You get a head start
- Pay the bank early, get interest
- You get early CONTROL of the race
Cons:
- Done to death, usually someone has the same idea
- Race is mentally harder as it progresses
- You already ran the "kick" out of you
2. SPRINT on Lap 3 (Stember)
Pros:
- You go fastest on the lap that is usually the slowest
- You jazz up the crowd, everybody's impressed
- With a big enough gap, the other competitors can't catch up with a simple "kick"
Cons:
- Without proper training, you won't be able to sustain the pace and will die on lap 4.
- Your last 150 will might be pretty slow
3. Sit and KICK (Centrowitz)
Pros:
- Easiest way to race
- You don't have to work as hard
- Good for sprinters trying long distance
Cons:
-Again, done to death. You have to be very careful with this tactic
- Will bore the crowd
- You don't get "the most out of yourself"
4. Even Splits (Wottle)
Pros:
- Easy to execute
- You don't have to worry about the opponents, only about the time
- Can get you a very fast time if effort is exerted evenly
- Allows you to get in a "rhythm"
Cons:
- Superior opponents will continue to drift away from you if they start fast
- If enough opponents used the "Sit and KICK" strategy instead, you may be screwed
- Can bore the crowd
- Hard to get "motivation" during the race
5. Fartlek (NCAA 2021 CC Men's Championship)
Pros:
- Only the toughest can win (you)
- Running comes from the "heart", not mind
- Will destroy athletes who never train with fartlek runs (many don't)
- Jazzes up the crowd
Cons:
- Can make your legs burn more
- An "Even Splits" runner can beat you if your legs burn too much at the end
- Makes for a very smelly race (ew)
6. Indian Run (What NAU Did in the Same Race)
Pros:
- Very easy mentally
- You and your teammates will indefinitely race well
- You can take up enough space that opponents won't be able to pass
- This tactic is rare, so it will usually work
Cons:
- A cowardly way to run a RACE
- Bores the crowd
- Can backfire if your teammates are noobs
- Your team will be very embarrassed if it fails
- You don't get "the most out of yourself" since the effort is evenly splayed
- No one from your team will win individually if an opponent used the "FAST Start" tactic
