I've been steadily building to 40-45 mpw. I think my training is starting to pay off. How can I still get better?
I first did a time trial in so-so shoes 2/6. Barely lumbered through 6 miles in 55:55. Granted it was also 26'F and cold but I made it through. I then safely built from 20 mpw to 44 mpw (with a scaleback every 3rd or 4th week).
Last week I had to skip running Fri. and Sat. due to Covid shots and personal commitments, so I put in 40 miles on Sun.-Thurs. I did 9 EZ on Wed. and 11 on Thurs., then took two days off. I did the 11-miler in 92-ish, with the first 10 in 82 and the last mile as a 10-min. cooldown.
Did an easy 5 Sunday, and yesterday I was slated to do a purely easy 6, but decided to push it a little bit and ran sub-24 for the last 3 miles.
Today I wanted to do another easy 8-miler just for conditioning, but somehow was able to get to 7:30 pace without even trying. I did stretch for 10 mins. instead of 5, but that couldn't made that much of an improvement?
I opened up with 4 miles in 32:43 (8:10-ish), but then felt strong and then ran 15:40 for the next 2 miles (48:23). The seventh mile I ran 7:43 (56:06) and then I just felt even stronger, closing a 7:20 to finish in 63:26. I was a little winded but recovered in 20 seconds. I think I could have even run the last 2 even faster but I also didn't want to get hurt.
Do you ever have days where everything just falls into place in your training and it keeps you going on this journey?
