I'm in my early 30s and set a goal for 2021 to run my first marathon in the fall. Looking to run a decent time (sub 2:40), which is realistic given what I ran in HS and college. Anyway, I've been training, and rather than getting faster over the last month, it seems I keep getting slower and feel worse on my runs. I don't really know why. My diet is good. I have some stress in my life but nothing terrible, nor am I depressed or anything. I've been doing 2 workouts per week plus 1 long run which I try to run at around current marathon pace. I don't really feel like I'm doing things much differently than I did in HS and college, but back then my body responded like crazy, and now it doesn't seem to be responding much at all.
The only explanation I can come up with is perhaps I'm running too hard on my hard and/or easy days, ie overtraining. Right now my plan is to hold my mileage and not do any workouts for 2 weeks and instead just run by feel, never running anywhere near "hard," then see how I feel after that. Just thought I'd consult the Board to see what other people think. What other reasons are there for getting slower rather than faster? Overtraining or illness are really the only ones I can think of, and I'm not ill as far as I know.
