Decker ran some crazy times in high school in the 800 and the mile then had injuries and surgery that derailed her for about three to four years. After 1974 if I recall she did not PR again until 1979.

I am sure everyone was writing Lynn Jennings off at one point too. Everyone is different.

A LOT of ppl wrote cranny off in years even when she was placing top 3 in NCAAs on the track bc her progression wasn’t linear enough for them. Look at her now. She is a great example.
Also back in the day Nicole Blood had a lot of ups and downs but by the end of her college career she was consistently at the top of the NCAA

This board has a cultish belief that unless female runners steadily pr from the freshman to senior years of high school they are doomed. Where this comes from is anyone's guess. They will have ebbs and flows, but as long as they stay healthy they usually sail right through it. Tuohy despite recovering from surgery is having by far the best season of any freshman distance runner. She was just 10 seconds off her great high school time in the 5km. This race was carbon copy of the XC Championship race and as her form/fitness keeps improving so will her time.
Death, taxes, and Astro obsessively posting in Katelyn Tuohy threads...
If you think that 15:47, 4:16, 2 All American Honors (so far), and the fastest freshman at the NCAAs is somehow a failure, you are not a serious person.

She had chronic compartment syndrome - relatively new surgery back then, in fact I think it was the late Dick Quax who put her on to it. That is why it took so long, was sometimes difficult to diagnose back then.
Often manifests itself after puberty (have had a few athletes in that situation, but not at her talent level), but the surgery doesn't always work either.

I was afraid she wouldn't improve, but she's looking really good thus far! Good for her :)
I mean, she still hasn’t improved! But I wish her the best and with better pacing I think she would have been close to a PR.
Ya hasn't improved yet. Gotta beat 15:37. It will probably happen though, just hasn't yet and might not be this year.
She doesn't just need to beat the time from 2 years ago. She needs to beat it by 3 or 4% as she ran her PR in old shoe tech. Keep things in context. The shoe effect has raised the bar so today's time seem fast. What we're looking at is the new normal for performances. I'm starting to accept the new times as the new normal. What needs to stop is comparisons to historical times. It's just not the same.

I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
