This is the closest I've seen to PRE @ Oregon. He ran from the front. Prefontaine woulda been proud.
Like it matters. He went to the front as a tactic and ran at a moderate pace, then kicked. It's not like he pushed hard from gun to tape.
Hocker did win Footlocker in HS AND ran a 1:50 in the 800. Looks like he has combined those talents for some great track times and track racing. Ok, I will criticize the manbun but not his running.

I remain unpersuaded. Let time tell us how great this is. We have game changing technology at play here. It is not clear what this means yet.
that game changing technology really helped your boy centro last week in LA. The times might not matter as much in relation to the past, but they are absolutely relevant in the current era of running. Coop and Cole are legit contenders (if not favorites) to run for the US at the olympics.

Centro is not my boy but a gold medal is something that the Oregon boys are not likely to ever receive on the world stage. I am not disparaging them. They are great collegiate runners. Time will tell but there is no indication they they will ever medal. Let us see how they develop and remember, they might be dining well to make an Olympic team. Even that is not guaranteed.
what would he have to do as a 19 year old to indicate he could medal one day? seems to me that he has done pretty much everything you could expect at his age. of course there are no guarantees and time will tell, but i dont think writing him off at the age of 19 is an intelligent take.
Does this mean Centro is in better shape than we thought? He beat Cole Hocker in the 5k this year.

Yeah he was definitely the best talent of his year in HS.
With both Teare and Hocker in 3:50 mile shape, I'm just happy we'll probably see a fast 1500m team. Don't want to see another 3:50 win gold, tactics be damned.

For sure only a fool would write him off. However, Hocker is going to be 20 in June and I guess he is about 9 months younger than Jakob Ingebrigtsen. If Jakob had doubled in the meet today and not been DQd, does anyone think Hocker can win the 3000m fresh? It seems unlikely. Just saying that while Hocker did great, is he is 7:35 shape? Maybe he is but as good as that is for a 19 year old, let us pump the brakes on this a bit.

What? 3:50 won gold and that race was stacked with all time top 10, 3:28 dudes. Unless you are saying you want Teare & Hocker to be front runners if they ever make a team,

It's just the mindset of the American running fanboy community. To overhype people who would be lucky enough to hold a Kenyan or Ethiopian runner's beer. Every year it's the same thing, on the male and female side.
Perhaps the fact that Kenya and Ethiopia don't have an LRC or equivalent and are a more humble culture in general is why they are busy training instead of pronouncing themselves as the next big thing prematurely. And not making fanboy youtube channels as if they is some kinds of running gods.
Proof your worth before making youtube fanboy channels.

Jakob has had his entire career mapped out by his dad. Has been training with world class runners for 10+ years despite only being 20-21.
Two years ago, Jakob was 15 seconds faster than Hocker in the mile, now, he’s ~3-4. There is a lot to be excited about.
Hocker has also shown an ability to finish faster than Jakob.
Yes, they have nothing to lose if they make the team (which I think a least one will), so hopefully will keep the pace honest.
It may just be me but Hocker looks to be at least 28 years old right now.
Winning NCAA races doesn’t make him a “star.” There’s a college age guy from Norway that is an actual “star.” When someone does something impressive on the world stage then you can refer to them as a “star.”
We are calling him a star. High school state champs who run 4:20 are stars. NCAA champs are definitely stars. Life would be pretty sad if only a handful of people in the world are stars.

Hocker didn't have an amazing time like Webb in high school, so you can't really say Hocker is like Webb. Hocker is amazingly good though and will almost definitely have a better pro career than Webb ever had.
1) It's my website so I can compare him to whoever I want.
2) The reason why I compared him to Webb is he ran 3;53 tonight. Webb's PR at age 19 was 3:53. It's a natural comparison particularly if you view the shoes as worth 3 seconds so then Hocker's real pb is 3:53.
3) It's interesting that you write about "almost definitely" have a better pro career than Webb. I get what you are talking about but to me it depends on how you define success.
People act like Webb sucked as a pro. But he beat virtually all the best guys in that Paris DL - something Centro has never come close to doing. And he ran an AR in the mile and 3:30 for the 1500.
Sadly I think Webb's AR in the mile is easily history due to the shoes in the near future. Weldon pointed that out on the podcast . And that's what sucks about the new shoes as I'll give Hocker little credit for the times.
When I texted the article on this race to Chris Lear - author of Running With The Buffs - he texted back, "Big whoop. Is that a 3:58 in normal shoes?" I think he was joking but just to be sure, I responded. "So you aren't super impressed by a 19-year old winning both the mile and 3k an hour apart?"
Of course that feat comes with a slight asterisk as well. If Nuguse is at NCAAs or if Kiptoo was in the 3k or if Hocker runs the DMR last night, I don't think he's a double winner at NCAAs. He's have definitely lost one of these races. And then we aren't going as ga-ga over him.
Don't misunderstand me. Il not saying he’s not gray. He is. I'm the one that started this thread with the bowdown title but my job is to put things in perspective.
You think he wouldn't want a shot a running a cross season? No way he goes pro
