After watching the Texas Qualifier, I once again noticed how all the unsponsored runners are choosing the Nike super spikes and this just drove home what great marketing Nike is getting for free. A lot of the runners under contract (even with Nike) seem hesitant to talk at length about the spikes but unsponsored guys are making the benefit clear. It almost makes me wonder why Nike even spends money on things like Bowerman or OTC when they could just have similar numbers of top runners paying them for the spikes and advertising for free. They're even getting free advertising from all the Reebok and On athletes who, despite their best efforts to hide the swoosh, cant resist that sweet ZoomX speed.
