There was a big rally today in NY in support of Asian Americans. The mayor and attorney general were there. Nevertheless a couple of crimes committed against Asians will not be prosecuted as hate crimes.

Hey, hate to be antagonistic, but you literally said it was “not a story” and maybe like a 3/10 in terms of how bad it was, so I’m not intentionally trying to mistepresent you.
And that you keep mentioning that 45 spewed his stupid racist rants...but that somehow shows this is NOT a one off? It may have started with DT, but it’s now a widely held belief that many Asian people have been fighting against for the past 13 months and it’s awful. It’s spread so far that apparently even one of the only Asian players in basketball who has celebrity status is hearing it on the court.
This guy doesn’t represent the whole U.S. and neither does Alabama Gunther waving his confederate flag, but I’m willing to bet you wouldn’t battle someone on LRC that had a problem with someone of that type. I’m not suggesting that anyone on should start a riot over Gunther anymore than we should with what happened to Lin. But it’s certainly not worth defending.
I’m glad to hear we’re on the same page that bigotry shouldn’t be tolerated anywhere, because it’s really not an either/or with discrimination based on skin color. There shouldn’t be 41 posts trying to decide if we can agree that this is not what we want to happen in this country. Sure some groups have had more history than others, but it’s not a competition of suffering; it’s a philosophy that stands against stereotyping anyone for his/her skin color.
For some reason you keep missing the bigger issue. Despite what you say, if elderly Asians are being singled out and brutally attacked because they are Asian IT DOES MATTER. You imply it only matters if its someone in authority doing it. You say it is wrong but nothing we should demonstrate about or get too upset by. You state that we have 350 million people so some will be racists or idiots, so almost like it should just be expected, like its normal.
Your cavalier attitude about this is surprising based on your solid posts from different threads and truthfully, very disappointing.
On the plus side, coach posted that people are starting to be aware and showing major support.
Stop being so damn fragile...Jeez, big babies.
Everyone wants to be a victim.

No that's not it. If random elderly blacks were attacked in a number of cities because they were black you would see major demonstrations and extensive major media coverage and sports teams would do something to help victims.
Asian Americans do not have the political clout that blacks have.
Right. Blacks have so much political clout

These thing should be prosecuted as Hate Crimes. If they target Asians simply because they are Asian that the definition of racism, but we as a society seem to give blacks a pass when it comes to this stuff.
If I walk through a black neighborhood and get mugged they would never investigate that as a racially motivated hate crime. I would actually be asked about why I was there and criticized for being so foolish.
If a some black guy were targeted in a mostly white area it would be national news and there would be riots, political posturing, etc..
Both incidents are insidious bad crimes, they just get disproportionate attention.

How peaceful was it?
A crime is a crime. This whole hate crime thing is nonsense.
It's....."we are going to punish you more because of what you were THINKING".

Some of the posters seem to believe there are rioters on speed dial. As I noted before, the Arbery murder was in a white neighborhood, was absolutely a hate crime and was as bad as it gets, but there were no protests. Theoretically, changes can be made to a police department, but how can you protest against racist individuals? There are already laws against murder and although it took awhile, the McMichaels and Bryan were arrested and charged with murder.
Asian-Americans are entitled the same fair treatment as other citizens and obviously have no responsibility for the pandemic. However, a racist insult by a NBA player does not make him the face of the mistreatment of Asian-Americans. He should be booted from his team. If the language of his contract makes it difficult to do so, he should at least make a public apology.
A serious show that (1) we as a country will not tolerate this racism (2) We support our Asian Americans (3) support more police protection for areas where elderly Asians frequent. (4) support stronger punishment for hate crimes. Why are you not in favor of this?
"Violence against Asians has been growing during the pandemic.
Between March and December last year, the organization Stop Asian American and Pacific Islander Hate recorded nearly 3,000 reports of anti-Asian hate incidents nationwide.
The New York City Police Department reported a 1,900% increase in anti-Asian hate crimes last year."

If you were merely trying to support Asians, you wouldn’t bring up blacks in the majority of your posts.

I believe I brought it up in one post. But the way blacks made the country aware and sensitive to their plight is the model the Asians should copy. Its a good thing. The Asians are not there yet. The comparison is valid though. Asians by comparison have been ignored. Maybe that;s changing now.
I agree with your 4 points, but the the racist insult by the BB player was not a hate crime and there was no threat of physical violence. It's no different than an AA being insulted by someone at a grocery store. Crucifying the the NBA player will not change anything.
I don't know why considering the Lin incident to be relatively insignificant compared to actual crimes and institutional discrimination against Asian-Americans to mean I condone the mistreatment of any group of people.
I am Asian American, and while I've never been called racist names, I've been passed over for jobs in favor of females and POCs.

I agree with that.
The only reason the Lin incident is of significance was that it just reflected the tolerant attitude our society has about racism directed at Asians. I am betting that it didn't occur to the players who said the racist comment that it was wrong to say.

And, if a top student, kept out of the Ivies for a mediocre Jewish student.

Yeah, those racist white people only dislike black people apparently. Either that, or strong families, education, hard work, and refraining from drug and alcohol addiction are keys to success. But I’m sure it’s the former.

Whiteys are inherently racist to anyone not color deficient; Native Americans,Blacks,Latinos,
Asians, etc,,, if it breaths and not pale, whiteys hate it.
