It looks like he’s also a competitive rock climber. I hope this isn’t Lukas Verzbicas all over again, where he waffles between the two sports and winds up in a career-ending rock climbing accident.

I believe Willis said, "My coach, Ron, is coaching him."

Don't think he gained time from it, just a HS runner not used to racing with a rail
Isn't there always a rail? I gues I don't really know. Almost all of my racing has been on asphalt, even in HS, so maybe there's not. Anyway, Quigley got DQd for less than this, although Mo took a bigger shortcut than her during the same event and didn't. -

He was running 5 minutes at the start of the 2019 season. How did this happen? He didn't really get good until senior year XC. He ran more than a 20 second PR to set a new national record?
He “got serious” after breaking 10:00 for 3200m as a sophomore. He had a strong junior season of XC where he made huge gains from the previous fall dropping into the 15:20s. This was spurred on when his dad (the HS coach) decided to have Warhurst and Willis start taking a more hands on approach to Hobbs’ training.
Then, COVID hit and Hobbs jumped all-in with the Ann Arbor based studs, mainly Willis. Two pros paced him to an 8:52 TT last Spring. This fall, he beat the state champ in their only head to head matchup during the season. Then, they were in separate heats (COVID adjustment to the race setup) at state. Hobbs ran the second fastest time ever, behind Ritz, on the MIS course. 15 minutes later Riley Hough ran a couple seconds quicker costing Hobbs the crown. Then, a winter of focused training and BOOM 3:57.
Thanks for this background. Any tuneup races before this? Im just trying to wrap my head
around someone I've only vaguely heard of suddenly vaulting ahead of Fisher and Drew Hunter and looking so darn smooth while doing it. -
Those who do not learn from Verzbicas are doomed to repeat it wrote:

Opening paragraph is almost as terrible as your take on this kid's interest in rock climbing! Let the kid enjoy another sport if he wants. It baffles me how some people on here think talented runners need to laser focus on running and wrap themselves in bubble wrap if they're not training! -
Grinding with pros since quarantine

I was actually joking. I bet we would not be friends. -
Nick and his wife Sierra are very good coaches. Nick coached by Ron Warhurst one of the best coaches over the last 50 years. Nick knows the mile and this kids upside obviously is huge. But going to NAU under Mike Smith will develop him. The future is bright

Should we be surprised that we haven’t heard of him? There was no spring track, there was no XC, Footlocker or NXN. -
Is it April 1st already? Never even heard of this kid.
-
Ok, going to NAU next year
The rich get richer... -
Remarkable! I have neve heard this name until today, I need to stay more in touch with the big high school names I guess.
I bet R Harrison breaks 4 this spring too. -
Yes we should be surprised because we follow the sport. Harrison, Lester, Steury, Wolfe, Wachtel, Miller, Strand, Merchant, Hope, just some names that we are familiar with.
-
Never heard of someone named "Hobbs" before.
-
Only 3 NCAA guys have gone faster this year...
Crazy fast time...
Interestingly, he is less than one second slower than Hunter’s current PB. -

“30 miles a week is all Ronnie prescribes.”
Really? -

Time trials last spring. Ran 4:08 mile and 8:53 3200 I believe
Goodness! The progression on this kid knew he was a national caliber top 10 for XC and hanging around U-M guys but geesh this altered school/training surely has brought his talents into form.
LRC/Gault/Brojos we're waiting for the interview! And his reason for NAU not Meechigan regardless, incredible!!! -
One of America’s largest talents uncovered. Rock climber starts 30 mile weeks and run high school indoor record. Wow.

Willis and the Michigan team helped him but he chooses to abandon them. Michigan is such a better school than NAU.
