Someone posted this on twitter earlier. I find it interesting because I think it's far from the most critical factor that determines who can win. Any predictions on what will happen in the long run? I've got one and while it's a bad outcome for Ukraine, it may be possibly worse for Putin and Russia.
IMO, Putin won't be able to achieve a complete takeover. Even in the unlikely scenario of no outside help to the Ukrainians, there are just way too many of them willing to fight until the end for their sovereignty. Regardless, they will be fed plenty of weapons to last as long as they wish. They have already been at it for many years holding the fort successfully. It's impossible to beat insurgents. It will be another Afghanistan for Russia and it might bankrupt them.

Ah...you're a conspiracy theorist. Of course you are. Moron.
Of course, the really sad and threatening thing is that while the Trumpers on this thread may be posting from their parents' basement, they have roughly half the voting public on their side.
For some time, a flag flying in front of new house in a wealthy neighborhood where I run had a Trump train flag flying beneath a U.S. flag. For the last 6-12 months, it was replaced by an Irish flag. Ran by there yesterday for the first time in many months, and now it's a Let's Go Brandon flag.
If only they were just in front of trailers.....

Yep, "conservatives" have given up on America and overwhelmingly prefer autocratic rule, and just to spite the libs, including successful people of color who the average uneducated white male just cannot cope with. I've never seen sorer losers than the tzees, and yes unfortunately it's too many of them. Every time I go to Florida, I barely see any American flags, it's still all Trump banners... he lost more than a year ago. The right wingers were always more of the nationalist types, but my how quickly they turned into full blown cultists. Deplorables - HRC was 100% correct.
Just one more year until we get:
Biden impeachment
Hunter biden investigation
BLM investigation
Antifa investigation
Election fraud investigation
Social media gets hammered by the fist of big government
Enjoy this last year of normality!
The mention of conspiracy theories gave me a thought that I don't think that I've ever had before. Trump has shown himself - extremely clearly - to be capable of behavior consistent with conspiracy theories, and yet roughly half the country still supports him and/or his party. Imagine the following:
- Reagan and his administration had plans to handle a potential pandemic in a way that would cost hundreds of thousands of lives.
- Obama tried to shake down a foreign leader for election help.
- Clinton planned to steal the election from Bush Sr. if he lost.
- Carter tried to use the executive branch to go after his political rivals.
- Etc., etc., etc.
Trump actually did it all, and more, and complete a******* like those on this thread and tens of millions of others are OK with it. Regardless of what they might claim.
Oh shoot, I forgot, Biden being a run-of-the-mill moderate D politician is ACTUALLY worse than all of the above. Silly me.
ol'newt is already talking about arresting members of congress for investigating January 6.
It's all coming, americans. the iron fist of 'small' 'conservative' government is getting ready to hit you in your face.
And the let's go brandon thing is such a lame and cowardly slogan to adopt. After losing, you start chanting an indirect insult at the winner, even in non-political events.... such wimps

They keep testing the dictator waters, and the base keep giving them the green light for more. Meanwhile, we continue to see no consequences for treasonous acts.

Newt is a media whore and will say anything to try to remain desperately relevant. Wouldn't take a single thing he says seriously

It really was the perfect test of American character:
Test 1: Let's make an incredibly obviously horrible human being president and see if he maintains significant popularity?
Grade: Fail
Test 2: Let's have him followed by a run-of-the-mill, long track record, no huge skeletons in the closet, moderate politician of the other party and see if roughly half the country will still talk themselves into the second guy being absolutely horrible? So bad that they're willing to go back to the autocrat - or at a minimum, support the party that is led by and supports the autocrat.
Grade: Fail
The Founding Fathers would be SO, SO ashamed.

ach you know how this works and so does newt.
he wants to be out there on the bleeding edge for two reasons:
1/ what you said - so cable news keeps interviewing him and he stays relevant.
2/ to expand the window of appropriate conversation. Suddenly the topic is out there. The trump caucus will now think it is reasonable to talk about these things. And then it goes mainstream eventually. I think they call it the overton window. Trumpists have been expanding that purposefully since 2015. And voila trumpist views, in the past considered not touchable, are suddenly in the conversation.

Still amazing, and incredibly disappointing, that a President can CLEARLY try to steal a federal election, and yet over a year later, the best hope we have for punishment appears to be one of the STATES (GA) doing something about.
The umpteenth reminder that, despite LOTS of very smart and hard-working and (mostly) well-intentioned legal minds working on it over the course of centuries, we still have a legal system that stands up SO poorly to a rich, powerful person willing to thumb his nose at it.

Reminds one how silly it is, at least in one significant respect, when people talk about how history will judge certain folks poorly. Sure, that might be true of Newt and so many other current Rs. But for those, mostly probably pretty unhealthy guys in their later years, they'll never have to "suffer" much, if at all, from the judgement of history. They'll be long in the ground. In the meantime, they soak up the adulation of the weak, stupid, and bad.

Telling Sally, "Don't be insane" is a bit like telling a sphere, "Don't be round."

While that's true, it's important to recognize that the right has pivoted dramatically toward anti-democracy. We are all pretty much desensitized to it now, but the implications are clearly serious, especially because the base wants more blood.

What's that term again, outrageously stupid?

Well, I blame the Founding Fathers, the electorate vote system is terrible. The other problem of course is minority rule resulting from disproportionate representation of the people in the Senate and Congress. Just imagine if we had a more democratic voting system - no Bush and no Trump, no concentration of power in the hands of a few Senators, etc. This is the real failure of America - it is simply not democratic enough and clearly there isn't much defense against further anti-democratization.
