Revelation was not meant to be taken literally and the Bible was not meant to be used as a science book.
If you think you can use Revelation to predict the exact manner of the end of humanity then you are just as wrong as the Jews who thought God's temple in Jerusalem could never be destroyed. Like those ancient Jews, your belief in your own ability to understand the scripture is getting in the way of a deeper relationship with God.
I suspect that your reading of Revelation does not allow for an almost instantaneous destruction of the earth by nuclear war? How about an asteroid? But clearly, both are quite possible.
God gives us free will. That includes the ability to destroy all human life if we so choose. And if we keep pumping carbon into the atmosphere, that's exactly what will happen. It is as certain to kill us as a nuclear holocaust, only slower.
