Alright. I'll save you the background information, but what you need to know is that I am a junior in high school running in cross country. I was at one point #2 on the team, but I dropped significantly until I became #13. I followed the same regimen as my teammates, and I do better than most of them in terms of sleep. For the past few weeks I have been feeling very tired and fatigued. I used to be able to do a five mile tempo run at 5:45, and now I am struggling to do 1200m repeats at 6:00 pace. I ran a 15:45 3 mile, and I recently run a race at 17:20. I've explored all outlets, and I have come to the conclusion that it is either over-training or an iron deficiency. However, I am leaning towards an iron deficiency. First, I think I have been somewhat overtrained before, and it resulted in a slight decrease in my performance and a plateau. That being said, I have never had such a drastic decrease in my performance. I had one rebound day last week with a 16:16, but it felt bad. And I poured my soul into that race just to get into varsity. Our conference championships are this Saturday, and I will do anything to get back. Additionally, this race will determine who makes the state roster. It sucks because some people say it's only "mental" or if only I would "try harder". I have a doctor's appointment on Friday for a ferritin test, but I can't wait that long. So, I decided to start taking 2 doses of 10mg liquid iron a day. I know this is risky, especially if I do not have iron deficiency, but it's all I have left. Will this hurt me and how dangerous is this? What would you do in my situation?
