I've been running since the start of 2020 but only had the ability to take myself seriously in mid-april, when I bumped my milage up to about 40 miles a week. I started running at an average of 8:45 miles (I know, bad) but now I'm down to having my tempo pace be about 7:15, LT pace about 6:30 and easy pace at about 7:55-8:10, depending on the weather. My 5km PR went down from 24 minutes in mid-April to 19:30, as time-trialed a month ago. For reference, I'm relatively young, so this sort of improvement is expected. I'm aiming to hit 18:30 at some point soon, hopefully before 2021.
However, I don't feel as though I'm improving fast enough. I'm up to 50 mpw at this point, and I see people who run 35 miles a week tops pulling up 17 minute 5kms, if not faster. What am I doing wrong? Should I be spending more time on workouts? My weekly schedule looks as follows.
M: 6.2miles at 8:00, 4x strides.
T: 6.2 miles at 7:45
W: 8 miles at 8:00
Th: Workout day- about 8.5 miles of running, LT intervals or speed workouts, depending on the week. I always make sure to have a good warmup/cooldown.
F: 7 miles at 8:00
S: 8 mile tempo at 7:15
S: 7 miles, first half at 8:00, second half at 7:30
Wanted to hear some input from other people. I'm guessing that I need to incorporate a proper "long run" into my schedule, but real life gets into the way which is annoying.
