I was watching the stream live, and when he said it the first thing I thought was 'oh he means because they're probably more likely 400m athletes who are typically more muscular [regardless of gender], but that could've been worded better'. *I didnt think people would take it to this extreme now*.
Firstly he's a very frequent british commentator who is normally very wary of making faux-pas and silly comment like this, so it is out of character for him. Secondly he then went on to awkwardly fumble into the rest of the commentary, knowing that what he said may be taken the wrong way.
I understand the importance of being careful on commenting on people's bodies etc but people have jumped all over this. He said they were more muscular, he never even implied that was a bad thing. I hadn't read Cain's comments in full until this thread and it seem's she's really run with it (pardon the pun) because it hit a personal chord here, forgetting that what she's talking about isnt exactly what was the 'issue' here. I hate to say it but if this was the men's 800 and the same comment was made, no one wouldve made a fuss about this, it's just gotten hyper-sensitive now around women's athletics.
Too many snowflakes in this world, If commentators want to talk about a woman's ass they should be able to because 75% of the dude's watching female athletics are watching it for that anyway let's face reality. In my opinion Mary Cain is just another failure that didn't make it so turned to social justice advocacy out of bitterness.

LRC note by Rojo: No posts have been deletd. As you can tell, the critic is unhinged.
Do you think it's appropriate to call a military veteran "Unhinged"?
Disgraceful
Wejo, he's not referring to any deleted post. he is referring to you calling other people "coddled" who happen to disagree with you.

I believe that the inference was that potato was unhinged, not HMV. However, if the shoe fits...
Is it appropriate to call a military veteran buttercup or dumb f**k? HMV appears to think so. He and I have already had a discussion about it. It was deleted. I am curious as to who did so and why, but I'm guessing that this post will also disappear. If the appropriate moderator wishes to clarify the situation, it would be appreciated.
I weep for the people who make a big deal out of this.

At this point, I'm beginning to think that either you are trolling or, alternately, that your porch light doesn't burn too bright. That said, point these people out and I will join you in calling them on it, right here, right now.
I agree with some of the stuff cain has said but this is a SUPER reach. they were clearly rabbits. and No rabbit's do not always look like who they are pacing. This was overly sensitive

kick rocks, to you & anyone else using this as an opportunity to trash women because this website condones it & doesn't take obvious stances on stuff like this leaving the forum to "debate" discrimination.
IDK--I didn't watch the whole race. It either seemed like he had an awkward moment or he just didn't have any research. So one or the other.
Yep, bodies of athletes have always been fair game. I'm not sure Dustin Pedroia or Jose Altuve have gotten out of a baseball game without a commentator calling them "small and scrappy" and Michael Phelps wingspan is picked apart even on a diagram measuring his whole body on NBC.
Not judging whether the comments made were appropriate or not, but I don't think I've ever heard comments made about a male pacemaker's body. There's a bit of a double standard going on.
Zdeňka Seidlová and Kateřina Hálová are 400/800 runners (probably more on the 400 side). Zdeňka Seidlová has some pretty frisky pics on her instagram and certainly is not shy about her body.
They clearly are more muscular than the 1500m runners. If LaShawn Merritt and Kerron Clement paced a mens' 1500m race, I think the announcers would have every right to have a chuckle and comment on the fact that they are built differently from the other runners. Runners' bodies are fair game for announcers to the extent they are commenting on how body composition affects performance.
F'ing Christ. If Trump re-wins the presidency, it'll be because of this strain of activism.
We should have every gender and ethnicity and body type represented in every announcing position such that the mere presence of all types should be enough to keep the comments in line
I have to disagree with Cain here. The comment was clearly comparing body types as relates to athletic build and ability. I think her past hurts have made her hypersensitive. Perhaps the pacers would have viewed those comments as compliments.

Wrong. Wejo called Honorable Military Veteran unhinged for calling Viking "Buttercup." So apparently it's okay for Wejo to call posters names, but not for posters to do so. In this thread alone, Wejo has called posters "Unhinged," "Coddled," and "Cancel Warriors."

I can't even with Mary Cain anymore man. I understood her explanation before due to criticism of body image, but this is ridiculous now. Do we have to nit-pick every little thing that is said nowadays? At this pace, sports are going to play in complete silence because of everyone and their mom (Karen) become search for reasons to become butt-hurt.

sorry bud. you are in the minority here. maybe you have some of your own issues to sort out.
The hesitation before using the word 'muscular' indicates that it was a euphemism, but not for fat, more like a comment on the posterior of the pacers, and the instagram you mentioned really bears it out. He wanted to say that they were attractive and womanly in some way that the distance runners weren't.
