Also anyone posting any advice that relates to grizzlies doesn't have a clue what you're talking about. Grizzlies and black bears are entirely different, especially in terms of aggression and behavior around people/

I find the story somewhat believable but think hey sure the distances could be off. Adrenaline = 100m = a mile etc. It's also believable that a teenager would lie, however I see no reason to doubt her.
Anyways what entirely everyone is missing is she didn't run down the main path from what I read. Of course a bear could out run her but if she was bushwhacking, as was mentioned, it IS plausible the bear would be going slower too.
Anyways I think the story is useless without strava and or pics of scrapes etc but I really won't loose sleep over this.
Mythbuster says plausible.

So you think it is plausible that a bear will slow down more than a human when running off road? Seems unlikely to me....
Personally I have never heard of pretty much any animal chasing a human for more than about 400m at any type of pace.....

This is very embarrassing for the bear. Can't catch a jogger after 5 miles.
Bear goes home devastated !
Bears bluff charge. No adult human has ever been killed by a black bear in the Adirondacks. This bear was trying to protect her cub, not eat dinner.
I realize there are holes in this story, but ya'll aren't even going at the right ones. There's no way this went on for 5 miles, but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt on not tracking distance well while running from a bear.
Even if you take out the alleged 5 mile chase from the story, there are still about a dozen other red flags already mentioned in this thread.
There is no way any part of this story is true.
And to make this better, this girl goes to a very dedicated Roman Catholic college that according to their website has a "passion for social justice".
This girl 100% said she was going running, but instead got trashed, got laid, and then when she didn't make it home had to come up with this story about a bear.
I spent a few years in the Tetons and had multiple bear encounters. Usually if you just keep a distance and go wide around them they just look at you funny and keep going about their business. I actually spoke with an expert who gives lectures on this stuff and he said basically the only time bears attack/kill humans is if there is something mentally wrong with them(chemically), they're absolutely starving to death, or they're protecting young. Not to mention they bluff charge quite a bit. Its hard to imagine a bear following someone for more than quarter of a mile.
California grizzlies are extinct, and the only bears you will see in the wild in California are black bears (barring a zoo escape or if the occasionally proposed grizzly reintroduction comes to pass). Does not apply if this incident took place in the 1920s or earlier.
(But black bears in California often aren't black in color, which is confusing, admittedly.)
Like I said before, I’ve been to Old Forge and had something similar happen . There are a lot of bears around there and they all recognize people are a food source and aren’t scared of them at all. In fact, one of the big tourist attractions used to be going to the Town of Webb dump and watching the bears scavenge . Anyway 6-7 years ago I was running the trails near the village ski area . Came across a mother bear and 3 cubs. We backed up a hundred yards and started running . Looked back after a mile and the bear was following us about 100 yards down the trail. Ran faster and ran the last 2 miles to our car at the ski area parking lot. Looked back and there was the bear sitting in the bushes staring at us.
Holy crap. That video should be played for everything not to do when you encounter a bear. #1 who the hell walks closer to a bear for a better video. The women recording should also be slowly backing away. A 100 meter lead on a bear isn’t much. #2 the girl that gets swatted turns her back on it #3 she runs away. I’m not saying I would respond correctly in a bear encounter but wow did these people get lucky.
Also it’s not funny but kinda funny the bear was like ok just a little tap for you.
Black Bear attacking you? She should have called the police and they would have shot it without question. Black Bears Matter. I want to believe this story but I can't. But whatever.
According to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, she did not set out for her run until 7:30 pm, around the time it would start to get dark.
Doesn't it seem a bit strange that she would start her run, in the wilderness no less, just when it is about to get dark?

Bump to this thread. I've been curious did anything come of this. I want to know if the real story ever came out or did Letsun let this one slip away.
Great story
The Bear ? , will retreat if you wave a picnic basket above your head .
She probably just told the journalist she was on a 5 mile run.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
