I am struggling with this now. If I exercise I am beat to a pulp and feel very unwell, not just out of shape. The burning in my lungs is nearly debilitating later in the day and throughout the week. Any advice? How long did it take for you to be able to exercise a bit?
Sorry you are going through this and I can relate to the burning lung feeling post exercise. For me, 1 thing I was able to do after about 1 month being sick was walk 1M+ a day, although I had odd heart spikes early on but they slowly ebbed and I usually felt better after as it helped keep me focused on doing something (I also wore out a pair of old running shoes doing it).
In terms of running, I went weeks nearly completely without running until most symptoms lessened/abated, which happened around 3-4 months (I did try a couple short runs during this time, but they triggered relapses). When I did start up again (also after getting tests that showed my heart/lungs not having anything serious), it was on a bike once a week going relatively easy for 30 minutes (doc recommended). I could still feel it in my lungs/HR was way more intense than usual (like 140 felt like 180-200), but it became easier over time. Since then, I added a 1 mile run and a 30min walk/run, which has become sort of speed work in a way. Had 2-3 solid weeks with that before a recent set-back (also getting new tests now). There's nothing linear about this, frustratingly. It's like this long, brutal weird endurance race we're in that we didn't sign up for. Still, I'm a lot better and feel on the right track.
What's maybe be important for you is to find a doctor who focuses not on whether it was/is COVID, but your symptoms. If you can get some tests on heart/lungs, that can either get you needed treatment OR if they show you are healing give you confidence to ease your way back out there. Some people discourage exercise, BTW, because exercise can exacerbate/cause ME/chronic fatigue syndrome from any post viral illness, so there is risk with that (another reason to make sure you are working with a doctor). In my case, since I'm not sure what I had initially, I do know any type of cold or virus would not be good for me now and I believe staying active -- to the extent that I can -- will keep me as healthy as possible if I were to catch anything, especially in the near-term. Hope you do better soon.
