I was too quick to flex without checking some of the divisions. So the real D1 bottom 5 (with at least 10 results) are:
Niagara University 16:51
Southern University 16:57
Delaware State 17:34
St. Bonaventure 17:43
Alabama A&M 18:22

The clarification for 5k and 10k was so that somebody like you didn't try to throw 800 or 400 runners into it by saying that they could not break 16. Yes Michigan has that many 5k/10k guys. NAU had only 9 guys run the 5k indoor but they have another 9 who can run 14:20 but they are on the sideline. You know how Alabama has 100 guys on the football team but 50 never get in the Game? It is like asking how many QBs they have that could throw for a certain % and you claim it is only 1 because the other 2 subs don't get in the game. You obviously were not part of a high level team.
I don’t think the football comparison is quite accurate but I get your point, and there’s some truth to it. But I think the law of averages means generally that number wouldn’t change dramatically.
Yes, Michigan and NAU have guys who didn’t run it but so did the program that I coach, who are about 35% percentile in D1 XC (low 100s in XCRI) and some of my slower guys wouldn’t break 16. They would offset NAU guys or Michigan guys. I understand maybe the top 25-40 programs have a different system for competing but the bottom 250 can balance things out much quicker than the top 40 could affect the percentage.
My guess is, at best, the number could grow from the 56% from the TFRRS data up into the 60-65% range. But for every ranked team that has 5 more guys who could do it, there are 5 bad teams with guys who can’t.
I run for a not amazing d3 school and we have guys sub 16 every year. It’s takes like 16 flat to make our conference meet. So I sure hope most d1 guys are running sub 16
You may be right. The bottom 100 teams are underfunded and referred to as fake D1s by the P5s.
