Southland Conference is out.
The WAC is out as well.
It's all over, folks. The NCAA announcement will just be a formality at this point. No XC this year.
Ehh, maybe...maybe not.
The internet confirms that at least in the SEC, Sun Belt and CUSA students are on campus, football teams (Sun Belt and CUSA) are starting padded practices and XC team sessions have begun. While they may cancel, the pervading feeling is they don't need to just because others are. I do not think the lack of NCAA sponsored championship will play a factor as southern schools mull the feasibility of fall sports.
For another poster. High schools are all over the map. Four different high schools in my local were conducting team practices at a city park yesterday.
Two issues:
Why would you waste a year of eligibility when there is going to be no meaningful games/meets?
If NCAA actually moves fall sports to the spring of 2021, if you play in the fall of 2020 and then again in the spring you burn 2 season of eligibility in one year.
The West Coast Conference, the XC power house, just announced all fall sports are postponed.
My understanding is that there well be no Regional or National Championship for DI XC. If a conference or a school decides to race XC that is their call.

In some cases yes; I am in a conference that is not yet cancelled. I have a number of fourth and fifth years who have stated that they do not want to redshirt as they have have no intent of continuing past graduation. If we have a season they will run.
Certainly for some athletes running is at the forefront of their decision making but many athletes will not use a red shirt simply because the national meet is no go.
If it's a use it or lose it situation for eligibility then it makes sense, but even for them it'll be a pointless season. 60% of teams cancelled, and maybe 20% of athletes are in that situation (75% are in season 1-3 and 5% are in season 4 but would do 5th year)
That means only 8% of athletes would have a reason to compete (40% * 20%), with even less if more conferences cancel. Even if you fudge that percentage a bit, you can see that this season is pointless no matter what. Even if your conference meet happens, it won't be a real victory if 90%+ don't show up. Some teams wouldn't even have 5 people to score points.
They should use up their eligiblity while they can, but even they aren't going to really have a season.
NCAA D1 championships for fall 2020 were all just cancelled....

First meet in 12 days. We are rolling in Iowa. My girls team will have two sub-19 5k runners. Would take a couple more. Iowa has proven it is willing to roll with sports
If you couldn't compete in March, April, May or June, what made anyone think you could compete in August or September when Covid19 is just as widespread and even worse in some of the largest States.
The Flobros earlier today said athletes will get back eligibility if they compete in fewer than 50% of competitions. Could there be some gamesmanship in the remaining conferences to have 1 meet then conferences followed by several meaningless meets to make the <50% rule?

Yes, for sure
That is correct. The actual number of meets one can participate in is 3 without burning a season. The NCAA well be giving an exact number for each fall sport soon.
Don't be surprised if the P5 and the G5 have their own separate National Championship.
