The fact is that there will be no "normal" while the disease is present, and no economic fix. Absent a vaccine the only strategy available is suppression if not elimination.
there could be a normal tomorrow for 90% of people if governments just told the very old, very obese, and sick people to voluntarily self-isolate. then we could achieve herd immunity amongst the general population and when the vulnerable came back out of isolation, they would be less likely to catch the virus as there would be less transmission.
they would still have to deal with seasonal outbreaks, just like with the normal flu, but that's life. people die from illnesses, it helps keep population growth in check.
The disease is incredibly contagious and no one is immune. Younger people can also be severely affected even if they don't die. We don't know for sure who will die of the disease, even though the greater proportion of deaths are amongst older people and those with underlying conditions. Healthy young people have also died. It isn't a "rest-home disease", where the extreme elderly in care are the only ones at risk and can easily be isolated. Many people with active lives are among those at risk; they are people we work with and who provide us with important services - like medical professionals. And they are members of our families. And friends. Attempting to completely isolate them from life around them in virtual ghettos for an indefinite and prolonged period would be as impractical as it is repugnant.
