speaking of BB King, Billy Gibbons should be on lists of favorite guitar players
Yeah. I didn't even know he actually played guuitar (his music wasn't my thing at all) back in the day but there's a utube vid of him playing While My Guitar Gently Weeps with some of the great rock guitarists and, if yo ask me, he blows them away.
My favorite 5:
My very own son
Sonny Landreth
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Mark Knopfler
John Lee Hooker

I thought of throwing some traditionalist blues guitarists in there, too. Your mention of John Lee Hooker brings to mind Lightnin' Hopkins.
I'll make a point of listening to some of both today, and thank you for that.
Warren Cuccurullo (before he freaked out and started making weird retro 80s albums)
John McLaughlin
Dave Fiuczynski
John Scofield
Charlie Hunter
Duane Allman
Prince
Terry Kath
Reggie Young
Neil Schon
I see nobody has mentioned Ritchie Blackmoor yet.
J Mascis
Kurt Vile
Nels Cline
José González
Neil Young
Gary Moore

Is there one female guitarist who is a favorite? One?
Rory Block is a very good roots blue player. She's not in the pantheon but she's good.
That would be Nancy Wilson for me.
Others -- I'll just throw out two that I haven't seen mentioned yet -- Terry Kath, Mick Ronson.
Those of you who don't know who Kath was, watch this.

Love both Kath & Ronson. I hate how the Axe is so underutilized in modern, mainstream, music.
Surprised to see JJ Cale mentioned only once here, and little love for classical guitarists.
In no real order:
1) Augustin Barrios
2) JJ Cale
3) Metheny
4) Van Halen
5) Dimebag
Clapton
Peter Green
Duane Allman
Freddy King
Mike Bloomfield
John McLaughlin
Jerry Garcia
Larry Corryell
Carlos Santana
Derek Trucks

Good list! I'll go:
1. Jimmy Page
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Neil Young
4. Eddie VH
5. Gary Ritchrath (my sleeper), very underrated.
Would probably change a bit in 6 mos, except Page is always on top.
Neil young can barely play rhythm in the key of G. The Hanson boys are better guitarists than NY.
1. Brad Paisley
2. Slash
3. Phil Keaggy
4. Chet
5. Billy Strings
Matt Pike (High on Fire/Sleep)
James Williamson
Greg Ginn
Bob Mould (Husker Du/Sugar era)
Tony Iommi (I can’t believe I’m the first.)
