I don't think that he will get it. It would be extremely strong if he pulls 12:45.
Agreed on all points

On the track he's the kind of guy that needs to make his break early because he just can't sustain a good pace and run a fast last lap. I don't think he will get much under 12:45 if that. Breaking the WR would require a 21 second PB and we know Covid has impacted the quality of his training.

Would anyone really want to watch a paced parade round to 12:35 for one athlete? I'd much rather watch Barega, Kejelcha, Cheptegei, Edris, Mead, Jakob all running for 12:37.
What do you think Bekele's record was? Not even his pacers could stick with him after 2k... what distance world record was ever set with anyone close behind? Bekele, Geb, Komen, I like to watch their records because they're beautiful runners and it's inspiring, but none of those records had anyone in the frame (or probably within 200m). You shouldn't expect any record attempt to have much competition.
I think Barega's got a better shot than Cheptegei, I'd like to see Cheptegei and Kipruto try the 10k though.

Sammy Wanjiru ran a world junior record behind Bekele's 10k WR. Legendary run.
Not even close to being within 200 meters though like you said.
Not really, he ran 12:50.x in Monaco, on roads. If you watch that race you'll spot several things.
1.He ran all the race, gun to tape solo.
2.Course was not ideal at all, several curves and 1-2 really tight corners.
3.It was undulating, always a bit up or down.
It's not impossible to think that on a very fast track like Monaco, with decent weather, 1-2 pacers and wavelights, he can go sub 12:37. And yes, spikes are faster than Next% in a 5k race. Monaco's track is faster than it's road race course too, not a doubt. To conclude, i think he already was in 12:40 shape in february..so he didn't have to improve his fitness dramatically.
Bring it on, Jurrie said he is confident in Joshua as he trained extremely consistent during the Pandemic.

Cheptegai has a great engine but lack the speed needed. I don't think he beat the best times of Komen, Gebresselassie and Bekele.
12:45 would be fantastic for him. But he has the guts to try for more.
Can you even imagine the colossal amount of quality work required to even attempt this mark? Kudos for Joshua, really brave. Also, he has enough speed, closed last 800m in 1:56 in Doha off of a fast race. Ran 13:05 in suboptimal conditions in Shanghai with only 3-4 weeks of training after a break, ran 3000 and 2 miles at or faster than Bekele's 5k record pace without being in top shape. Joshua doesn't have the speed to attack the 3,000m WR but the 5,000 and 10,000 are in his grasp.
Cheptegei is absolutely able to destroy the 5000m World record. And I will even say, it's very likely he will.
You guys are out of your mind if you think he can't. The guy ran 13 seconds off the world record by running all alone, on a hilly road course, with 2 very tight turns.
If his training until then goes smooth, and he doesn't suffer an "off day" the moment of the event, I will say there is 80% chances he will break it.
Is this what track and field comes down to now? Guys are going to attempt to break world record solo. So who is next and which event? Will Bekele go solo and try to break Kipchoge’s world record? Another dude will try to break the half marathon world record? Britany Spears is going to break Usain Bolt’s 100m record by running it in 5 seconds? Or was it 6 seconds?

13 seconds is another world and also the monaco race wad not hilly at all but flat. He won t improve much.
I laugh at the idea of people thinking that Cheptegai has the ability to dedtroy bekele , gebre and komen.
It's somewhere in the middle. You can rewatch the race anytime, the course was undulating at all times, definitely worth around 1-2"/km.
He also ran it solo and the course had a few tight turns. Monaco's track is fast, will have good pacemakers or wavelight, but the weather will be pretty warm. In conclusion it will be really, really close and it can go either way.

95% of chance of no record

Apologies I meant Mo Ahmed the Canadian who was 3rd in Doha 2019.
Apparently people still don't understand that the road is much faster nowadays. Cheptegei is great, but he has zero chance to break Bekele's record, even with those new cheaterfly spikes.

Monaco wasn't flat at all, go watch it again
If Woody Kincaid can run 12:58, surely Joshua can run 12:35 on a very good day.

I guess it's personal choice.
Paced world records can be fun but I think it's the competition that really makes the sport.
I'd much rather an athlete go after a WR in a diamond league with other athletes rather than individuals go off and organise special paced events just for them to run well in a low pressure environment.
I didn't enjoy the Ingebrigtsens show the other week and if this is the same type of event I won't enjoy this either.

To me it's boring.
Whether he breaks the record or not I would come away thinking "I wonder what would have happened if Barega etc were in that race?".
Couple years ago we had a great race where several players were in the mix, Kejelcha turned the screw and broke the field and then Barega out kicked Kejelcha in the last 200 to a stunning 12:43.
That's what I want to see.
I get what your saying - head to head racing with fast times and fast last laps are more interesting than a paced time trial. Paris 2012 and Bruxelles 2018 were amazing races, achieving rare fast times in the last decade. But that doesn't make a world record boring, and there is no real racing at the moment.
And apparently watching 5000m racing is not interesting enough to keep it in the Diamond League going forward.

This is a Diamond League race dude.
Update
Jakob,Filip and Henrik Ingebrigtsen will all compete in Monaco, either in the 1500m or in the 5000m WR attempt.
Henrik will do the 5000m, while for Jakob and Filip is yet to be confirmed.
