You sure that elite private schools like Harvard and Yale are "filled with Asians"? Not sure about the recruiting part.

Compared to the average state school, absolutely.
Racist Ivies deny Asians fair access. The numerical quote is around 20% now for Asians. Harvard has written policies while other Ivies are by word of mouth. The US Justice Department may soon be granted a Consent Decree and manage Ivy Admission Departments on a day to day basis to administer fair admissions under the US Civil Rights Act. Asian enrollment may jump to University of California levels. The Ivies will have to comply or lose $100 Billion in Federal Research monies. Affiliated labs and companies may also have funds severely impacted. They're grant applications and computer based accounting records solidly tie them to the main Ivy campuses. So they will fail like Stanford Research Institute did recently to avoid the Justice Dept oversight.

No, your brain has yet to shift from everything being labeled racist. Calm TF down
ANTI-Semitism, Islamo-Phobia, Anti-Asian, Anti-LGBT hatred plague the letsrun owners.
Shalom.
We have too many Whites , Asians, and Jewish in colleges. We also have too many Italian & Irish Catholics in college, too many Polish, German and Russians, also too many Hispanics. We need to sort this out by identities so we can get just the right mix.
Or perhaps we can just do it the old fashion way, simply by meritocracy. I came up with this idea all by myself.
If we are including Indian-Americans in this discussion, then there are plenty in the US that have become good runners (even though like Chinese-Americans, the focus is on education).
I believe the only Asian-American to win an NCAA distance running title is Monal Chokshi (at Stanford). Additionally, New Jersey has had many top Indian-American runners who run at places like Duke and Princeton now. Stanford has also had a few Indian-Americans on their distance teams as well (and have at least 1 or 2 right now).
Seems like most of them go to the top schools to run, though there are also people Sukhi Khosla (4:03 miler in high school) who runs at Oklahoma State now.
I disagree, what about the Hakone Ekiden race? They dont really seem to do xc in most asian countries.

Why is that the case for Indian Americans, but not for Korean Americans, Japanese Americans, or Chinese Americans?

That's really fascinating. Thanks for sharing!

I'd attribute that to their body frame. The majority tend to be very skinny legged and have high calf insertions. I could be wrong though.
Check out the size difference between Patel (13:51 5k) and his teammates:

Not sure his anecdote is a trend. I remember Chokshi, but that's one person in the '90s. There have been lots of threads about Asian American runners over the years, and Indians weren't mentioned much except for Chokshi, so this is a more recent trend. There are and have been other Asians running in the NCAA.
As for reasons, there are thousands of individual answers, but culture explains the numbers, not running talent.

Nope. Who are you thinking of?
Is that the guy that shredded the sole of his foot from running the majority of an indoor 5000 missing a shoe?

Still, Asians are definitely underrepresented in XC and track in the US

Not trying to be racist, but as an Asian I have to say we have much less running talent compared than other races. A 17 min 5k for an Asian is probably equal to a 16 min 5k for a caucasian. It's apparent at my mostly Asian HS, where the top runner ran a 16 min 5k, whereas the top runner at a mostly white HS would run 15 min. While it's more PC to say that we're more focused on academics, the truth is that we can't keep up in races.
I agree with john. There are several reasons for this I believe. And as far as Japan goes, their times are really poor given the amount of training they do.
1. Asians are study focused from a very young age. Sure, some will play sports here and there, such as basketball. But they'll rarely play more aerobic sports like soccer or football. There's just less physical development at an early age.
2. Asians in general run a very high metabolism. That's why they are so skinny. Having high metabolism makes your body run hot, which is terrible for long distance running. (It's also probably why Yuki excelled in Boston)
3. Anecdotally, asians are more fast twitch based. The Chinese are decent sprinters, with several in the finals of track events. I don't see any of them in long distance. We also see several basketball superstars, as well as table tennis, both fast twitched based sports.
4. Asians also have a shorter legs to torso ratio, which is also bad for long distance running.
