To me, the best movie of the last 20 years is "The Lives of Others," from Germany. By quite bit.
I'm glad to see so many people mention "Ex Machina." On previous threads and lists like this, it's not mentioned often enough.
I am not a fan of conventional "horror" films and they don't scare me, but "Requiem for a Dream" is the most horrifying film I've ever seen. You'll NEVER forget it, so be ready.
Probably missed some, but here's my criteria: seen more than once and want to see again, in consideration for top 10. I thought Mad Max and Dark Knight were great but have only seen once and have never really wanted to see again.
Under the Skin (my choice for #1)
Holy Motors
There Will be Blood
No Country for Old Men
Lost in Translation
Anomalisa
Grand Budapest Hotel
Spirited Away
BladeRunner 2047
Perfume
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Machinist
Inception
The Return
Frances Ha
Locke
Sideways
Memento
Kill bill vol 2
City of God
Whiplash
The Favorite
Adaptation
Black Swan
Mulholland Drive
The Road
Night Crawler
Upstream Color
Mandy ( a stretch, but I love watching it)
Mud
Moon
Oh Brother Where Art Thou
Interstellar
Ex Machina
Looking at these lists reminds me of why I quit watching Hollywood movies. The best stuff these days are the mini series like Breaking Bad, The Wire, Madmen. Carnivale, Olive Kitteridge, Boardwalk Empire, Doc Martin etc. I could list another 20 that are better than the recent Hollywood releases. Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm are also more enjoyable.
would probably add:
Amelie
Annihilation
to that list too

Exactly. It was hard for me to think of great, memorable or films that will be considered masterpieces, especially American films. I miss the 70's films. The talent has moved to TV.
Yes, I agree that 'Ex Machina' is one of the best movies of the past decade.
I have had some interesting conversations about wether something like a robot doll could be possible in the near future.
Also, how that would change the dynamic of male/female relationships.
If you could purchase a custom made robot that was exactly like a real woman, then why would any man want a real woman?
The robot has zero problems to deal with such as divorce, infidelity, children, child support, alimony, in-laws, STDs, etc
In fact, you not only never have to deal with those problems, you are also getting someone who never ages, always looks hot, is custom designed to be your ideal body type, and her mind is custom designed to like everything you like.
My only question is: where do I buy one and when is it available?

THANK YOU. I wondered when someone would get around to mentioning this brilliant film.

And so is The Big Lebowski.
My wife and I were two of about 1,700 people who might have actually seen that in a theatre. But it's gotten huge (and deserved IMO) viewing on video/streaming in this century, so maybe we could call that a movie of the last 20 years...
All the same remarks, I guess, might be true of Office Space. Not great filmmaking, maybe, but I have trouble thinking of another movie that's so entered the culture--Airplane, maybe, back in the day.
Toy Story 3. One of the rare cases where the third movie is the best one.

Most Hollywood movies these days are little more than comic books. Movies used to be more like Novels.
Looking back over these lists the one movie I did like a lot was El Machina. Anything with Alicia Vikander is worth watching.

Millions saw Big Lebowski in the theatre. It grossed almost $50 million.
It has only been mentioned once so far, but my vote goes to City of God. It makes you feel like you are right there living in a rough neighborhood that turns into an outright war zone where half the kids are armed, hardened gangsters by age 13.
Dont forget 'Tank Girl', Lori Petti, Ice-T, Malcom McDowell. Classic.
