Oregon Project tweeted yesterday that Treniere and Rupp are competing tonight at the House of Track. I don't see Rupp on the entry lists. Anyone have more info on what the story is?

My top 3 / 6 are:

Meb, Puskedra, Kibet / Chelanga, Rupp, Ritz.

For obvious reasons Rupp is a contender, and when you run 27:30 and sub 61 as Estrada has, one has to consider him to be a real threat. Of course, being excellent in the 10 and half doesn't always translate to the marathon. What I was trying to do was to show everyone for whom there is some reason to think he's in the running for a spot--Vail, for example, but he was out injured for a long time, and so I don't see him as a viable contender--but then to cut down that list. In the case of Ward and Pennel, while they are fine runners, when you look at their PRs in the marathon, and look at their PRs in other events, I just don't see it. Now one could argue that Ritz went from 2:14 to 2:11 (in the Central Park course) to make the team for 2008, but those guys don't have Ritz's talent. So even if Ward improved a minute and Pennel two minutes, I still don't see them as viable contenders. Another way of putting this--Ritz's PR is over 5 minutes better than Ward's and almost 6 minutes better than Pennel's. Meb's PR is almost the same in difference to them. Puskedra's 2:10 is over two and a half minutes better than Ward. I see Rupp, Ritz, Meb, and Puskedra as being in a different league (Curtis approaches that league, in part because of the way the Hansons are bringing him along). Nevertheless, I could see a dozen guys being together at 30k, and in a marathon, the unexpected does happen.

He's running against experienced marathoners. If its a fast day for others he may have to run the fastest american debut marathon ever on a not so fast course.The pressure here is a little different, if this was just a Chicago , NYC or even Boston, running a good time and finishing amongst the top it would be a great effort or debut.Everybody now has him winning at the trials.

Perhaps you hit "Reply" to my post coincidentally, but I would like to point out that I haven't said Rupp would make the team, much less that he is already the best marathoner in America. In fact, the first item on my list above cuts against Rupp. Nevertheless, given his pedigree, it's hard not to rate him as being in the top four or five of those who might make the team.

I see responses varying from he's the favorite, he'll make the team, he'll get dropped after 20 miles, he'll drop out, and he'll be a DNS.

The bottom line is Rupp's presence adds a lot of interest to this race. Regardless of the outcome, I'm glad he's running.

Rupp will not "have to run the fastest american debut marathon ever," meaning faster than 2:08:24. Only one person in the field, Ritzenhein, has ever beaten that time and he did it almost four years ago, in Chicago, with pacers. No American broke 2:10 this year. Only Meb has broken 2:10 in the last two years. In the history of the Olympic Trials, only four men have broken 2:10. One of them is retired. One of them is 40-years-old. One is 39 and hasn't broken 2:15 in four years. And one of them is Ritz. No one in the history of the Olympic Trials has ever broken 2:09. Rupp will absolutely not need to run a record debut to win.

rupp will drop out at 18 miles if he's not feeling tip top. then prep for 10k track.

seems like he ran 62 min half comfortably.

I doubt it, back when Ritz was with NOP, Rupp, Ritz and Mo ran 18 mile training runs on dirt at the likely OTM pace and this was when Rupp was training primarily like a 5K guy running less than 100 mpw. Not sure how Rupp will do in a fast WMM, but the U.S. OTM is a perfect set up. The OTM will only be run at a 2:12 pace, I can't imagine that stressing an athlete capable of running a one-hour half marathon and a sub-7 10K. Back when Adbi, Meb, Sell, Ritz and Hall were at the top of their game, perhaps Rupp would have had to work, but the state of U.S. marathon has fallen to the point where I would be surprised if Rupp did not win.

You are correct, I was just adding to your comments and writing out loud. I do feel though if he is not in it over the last few miles he will drop.Lots of important races down the line this year for him. A much larger payday for a debut marathon away from the trials as the next great american hope.

Fourth place is worth $25,000 and fifth place is worth $20,000. That's a decent incentive to not drop out late.

I really doubt that, I don't think Sal/Rupp make hasty decisions. Sure it might be a little icing on the cake but not the decision to bake the cake.
