Women were 16:49 at 5k (2:21 pace) and now we're just past 4 miles and it looks like every American woman has been dropped from the lead pack of about 15 women. Mile 5 was 5:00, so that's why.
Okay, now after a 5:17 5th mile, Annie Frisbie has latched onto the lead group of women.
You know, if I had no interest in running or the marathon. And you just told me the story of how some idiots woke up early to watch every local news story except the Boston marathon runners running the Boston marathon, I'd think it was hilarious.
I can understand why Mantz and Young flew out in front the first 5k. Sure, you’re using some energy but if you’re ready for a career day and you want a fast race, maybe you can “bait” the rest of the field into a fast race early and settle into the pack after establishing the tone, as opposed to risking letting it go through the half in 65+. And if everyone else had insisted on jogging the first 10k and let them go, then you try to exploit that gap and steal the race.
