Above all, Grant Fisher is the real deal. 3:50 1500m as a soph, undefeated as a junior... This kid who has Canadian family according to his interview, might be the best in the country. Better than haney or cerake... Who knows

So I attended the race today and had an amazing time watching two awesome races, but walked away pissed. I didnt know that several years ago footlocker stopped paying for a coach or parent to accompany the athlete to the meet. They are sending kids 14-18 across the country to the biggest race of there lives without anyone they know to accompany them. This is just flat out wrong. I don't have any idea what Tessa's family's income level is but considering it was her dads first trip on an airplane I'm going to assume it ain't huge. The footlocker national champions dad I'm sure had to struggle to figure out a way to pay for a trip and a hotel room etc. cause footlocker and asiacs can't afford to fly an extra 40 bodies to the race. It's insane. They don't need to put the kids up at the hotel del. hit the holiday inn and send a parent (or coach) w them so that the kid can have someone they know and love w them. Can someone explain the scoring results? What is 2 3 2 3 supposed to mean? Or is this just messed up?

I've been to both NXN and FL, on multiple occasions, and I will admit that I do get a bit sick of reading people's rants about how bad FL is compared to NXN, especially from people who have probably not been to either. To be clear, as far as I've known, FL has never paid for a coach to go...it is not as if they used to and stopped. I don't remember the exact situation, but if I recall, it had something to do with certain states who wouldn't even be able to send athletes, unless it was clear that they were individuals, and not representing their schools, etc. I seem to remember some talk about this when NIKE Nationals started too. To be fair, also, NIKE paid for one coach, but not for parents. I was given money for each of my trips to FL by my school boosters. It would have been nice to have been covered by Footlocker, but this was by no means a shortcoming on the event. Most national meets don't cover costs for coaches or parents, even if some do give stipends to cover athlete costs.
I will say this for Footlocker....they have always done everything in their power and budget to treat the kids who earn their trips like kings and queens, and have given them an athletic experience that they will never forget. As far as I am concerned, not throwing money in to cover costs for a family or coach to travel does not take away from the phenomenal athletic competition it is.
I thought helicopter parents like you would just fly alongside the plane.

According to Watchout, they are very even.
This is where speed ratings are not perfect. Two different races with two different individuals that use different points for their speed ratings.
Usually the two raters are not too far apart, but for the top runners from each race here is what they reported:
Watchout:
Wilmot 202.4
Haney 199.4
Anderson 199.4
Fisher 202.2
Dressel 201.3
Maton 198.3
Tullyrunners:
Wilmot 199
Haney 196
Anderson 196

As you can see, Footlocker they agree upon. However, NXN there is quite the discrepancy. Watchout has the ratings 3.4 higher per runner. Correct me if I'm wrong, but each point is 3 seconds, so thats about 10 seconds difference in ratings for NXN.
I will use Dressel and Anderson as my comparison since they both had similar races at their respective national meet and have raced many times throughout the season.
Dressel and Anderson have been racing very near each other with Anderson slowly closing the gap until the state meet where Anderson pulled away and won with a 200 speed rating. I think if Dressel and Wilmot didn't give up during their races at state that they would have been very close to Hardy and Anderson. But they both were jogging the final stretch.
Assuming that Anderson raced near his state meet level (which he raced very similar) then his speed rating would be near his state meet rating. Also, Anderson has finished a few seconds behind Dressel many times throughout the season, so that would account for 1-2 speed rating difference. They both had great races at their national meet, so their speed rating should be within 1-2 of each other.
I went to XC Nationals back when it was called Kinney Nationals. Only 8 atheletes per region went to finals and the sponsor did not pay for a coach or parent to accompany the athletes. The regional coaches were responsible for the athletes and they did an excellent job.
Totally disagree with you - I went with three of my athletes to FL Nationals and the first time, the town donated money to send me and the 2nd time I was able to afford to go. My 3rd trip was to Orlando nationals and took the family. With a little imagination, people can figure out how to get families, coaches, etc. to nationals. Don't blame footlocker!

She is the first person I've heard of that doesn't enjoy their two weeks off from running between seasons. Shocking!

I work for Footlocker at corporate in Wausau, Wisconsin. Believe me, it is an astoundingly cheap company. A couple years ago, I asked around to see if anyone was driving to the MW Kenosha meet that weekend. Not only was no one going to the meet, no one knew anything about the meet. Apparently everything is run out of FL NYC headquarters. Again, I don't work at a Footlocker store in a mall, I work at Footlocker corporate.
If anything, NXN and Nike will not cause FL CC Nationals to collapse. Footlocker and Eastbay are major Nike vendors and Nike makes a ton of money when EB and FL handle their online launches and deal with Nike quality issues rather than Nike handling them. FL is a very stockholder and investor driven company. The national meet will end when those stockholders look at the bottom line and ask, "Why are we wasting money on this?" It will be a shame when it happens but given the tenor of the times, I think it will happen. Given what I know about the company, I'm surprised FL puts those athletes up in a four-star hotel rather than at a Super 8 near the airport.
Not to mention her season started in August, and she decided to do FL almost as an afterthought after the state meet. Girl was born to run!

Does Footlocker have a program for the primary coach of each athlete to attend at Nationals? Is the coach invited or involved in any way?
What about at NXN? I heard that each athlete's coach is invited to participate in the whole experience.

Doesn't everyone's XC season start in August? She did FL regionals as a freshman, sophomore and was registered for the race her junior year but was injured at the end of the season. I doubt the year that you take 2 mins off your previous 5k times you just decide to enter the race as an after thought.
Is there a way to see where each Footlocker finalist is committed to college? I wonder how many seniors are already committed?
