I forgot how much of a cesspool the comments can be on this site. The doping thing is just ridiculous, as are the anti-Mormon slurs. What is wrong with you people?
Not sure if anybody said this, but I'm pretty sure that her 2 mile split in this 5k was faster than her 2 mile at Arcadia. Incredible improvement, I wonder if she could ever run low 14s or even break 14?
The race commentators stated she did her last mile in 4:35. 😳. Think about that . . . 2.1 miles into a hard effort, close with a 4:35 mile.
Jane kinda be like . . .
“They’re on the turn, and Secretariat is blazing along! The first three-quarters of a mile in 1:09 4/5. Secretariat is widening now. He is moving like a tremendous machine! Secretariat by 12 — Secretariat by 14 lengths on the turn. Sham is dropping back. . . . Secretariat is all alone. He’s out there almost a sixteenth of a mile away from the rest of the field. Secretariat is in a position that seems impossible to catch. He’s into the stretch. Secretariat leads this field by 18 lengths… Secretariat is going to be the Triple Crown winner.”
-Charles “Chic” Anderson, Belmont Stakes 1973, 31 length Triple Crown event victory. Remains fastest 1 1/2 run ever (2:24) by over 2.4 seconds.

4:35 mile is 14:14 pace
Don’t get me wrong. it’s great. But that’s why the NCAA system exists. Hopefully, Doris and others will bring her to that next level.
Watching her increase pace steadily and sprint last 400 just makes me think we are looking at the modern day female version of a young Jim Ryun. So confident, focused and efficient with even better form. She'll be getting stronger over the next couple years. She's not a flash in the pan. Think Secretariat. She hasn't seen her best days by a long shot. That other girl clipping at her heels, even passing her and probably getting in her way just made her crank it up.
Think Secretariat? The drugged Secretariat who after a life time of being drugged had a heart more than 3x the size of a normal thoroughbred? Cardiomyopathy drug induced?
Weight: Secretariat's heart weighed approximately 22 pounds (9.5 to 10 kg). Average Comparison: The average heart of a Thoroughbred horse weighs only about 8.5 pounds (around 3.9 kg), making Secretariat's heart nearly three times the normal size.
I'm not accusing Jane of being enhanced by exogenous drugs but Secretariat clearly was as have been all "champion" thoroughbreds. Unlike T&F, the coaches (trainers) are suspended....see Baffert etal.....but Bob Kersee is just a fundamentals only miracle as is Sydney and Flo Jo.
Pick better analogies. By the way....Secretariat only ran against 3 horses I believe in his magical Belmont.
As great as this performance was, she could go well into the 14:30s with some of the second-tier 14:20s/14:30s pros. This should also suggest how fit Doris was. She was hardly breaking a sweat at NCAA xc. She can run 14:10s. There's a reason she was able to run away from Hedengren and put that much distance on her at the end.
There's nothing more common than another teen prodigy. We saw Valby and now it's Hedengren. It's all through the sport today. There will be another along shortly and for much the same reasons.
I have studied it and I've followed the sport since the 70's. I was a big fan of the great Peg Neppel-Darrah before she unexceptionally died of cancer, and my following of the sport is not looking back at old T&F magazines, but followed in real time. Given what I have seen over the course of "decades", I am 100% confident in my observation and it will be proven correct.
If you've truly followed this sport for decades, then you should know that future success is not guaranteed for teenaged phenoms. It's fine to predict Jane WILL BE the American women's distance running goat. It's stupid to say she already IS.

Secretariat's large heart was not due to drugs.
It was caused by a rare mutation that has been observed in a few lines of race horses.

Absolute nonsense. Valby was not a "teen" prodigy. She wasn't even on the radar until her junior year- when she was 21 or 22. And although Tuohy was great in high school, she was nothing special in college until her junior year.
There has never been a college freshman running the times and winning races as easily as Hedengren. It took the the 5th place finisher in World Steeplechase to beat her.

Thanks for adding this. Very interesting! For all the physiology geniuses here, you try to complicate a topic with ignorant minutiae. You haven't witnessed, experienced or really understood much because all you have to do is que AI and BLAM! You're an expert! Please dont think you are any kind of problem solvers and attempt an engineering program or medical specialist residency. The world would be much better off if you didn't.
By the way, if your plan to complete any professional training in your future relies on your lazy, uncurious habits, Im telling you now, the leaders in the field wont let you past them. I hope you dont experience failure too harshly. Just heed warnings from those that have gone before you.
My comparisons are surely beyond your comprehension due to your untrust of earlier generations. You'll have to work past that and I encourage you to question others. But rather than reacting, try questioning and understanding. Then compare to others and your own values. It's not a right or wrong scenario like most other topics here. It's just curiosity, comparing ideas and understanding thats really lacking with LRC forum attendees.
In regards to JH and JR comparison: From what I've read and witnessed/observed, they are both physically similar with JH having better mechanics. Ryun had a head roll but overall was very efficient, especially when kicking. Both have a smooth relaxed gait and both are not uncomfortable with pushing harder, further away from finish line at an earlier age than most.
Jane will continue to get stronger as already witnessed which in turn increases her overall avg speed. No, she doesn't compete in the same events but will get the same results and has already at her level(s) hs, college frosh that Ryun experienced. National and World class athletes at an early age. She's also still figuring out her own limits which are already beyond records set by the best that came before her. Ryun experienced the same thing. Both respo d well to bei g challenged regardless of distance to the finish line. They are both great pacers but also great racers durimg the race, not just at the end. Overall, the public had/has high expectations for both to have a chance to be the best when it counts the most. Im certain she has Ryun like improvements if not more still in her future with 5k and 10k her best opportunities. Not anything like Touhy or Valby, much better. Here's something to look for. Watch what happens when someone comes up to her shoulder or passes her. Watch her controlled and focused effort. It's not a binary switch. It's a variable speed, smooth effort that is timed with precision. She knows what she's doing. Only one, older and more experienced person has been able to move away from her. But she never lost control of her effort. She just needs more time. It's coming.
Secretariat comparison explanation for you slow witted souls: 3 races or 1000 races it's all the same. That horse had 2 to feel itself out and then in the 3rd was tested by an ignorant fool plan that blew up in their face. Secretariat knew its limits. All it needed was an opportunity to run free. If you've never been around thoroughbreds, they were born to be tested and happily oblige. When that girl figures out what she's capable of and at her peak, she gets pushed, I hope we all see something special. Something that will endure. Maybe something that people will believe can't be surpassed.

all the drug morons are likely trumpers who need to rile up the conspiracy freaks because they still can't believe someone is better than they are (just like daddy moron trump) and hate to admit that hard work and proper genetics can work wonders. all you losers need to go away for a very long time!!
I forgot how much of a cesspool the comments can be on this site. The doping thing is just ridiculous, as are the anti-Mormon slurs. What is wrong with you people?
Just my opinion here but I think what is happening on the women's side is just a delayed version of what happened on the men's side regarding western runners vs africans. If you ran back in my day (the 90s) word on the street was anything over 70mpw would get you injured (we did about 50mpw at my school which was a perennial top 20 D1 NCAA XC team) and africans had an unstoppable genetic advantage.
At some point, approximately coinciding with Rupp's rise, that loser mentality finally got thrown out and people started training correctly. Seeing Rupp and others credibly contend for medals broke the idea that western runners can't compete with africans and at the same time, the training methods that worked for the africans (and were disregarded by the west because we thought we were smarter) started being adopted by westerners, and now a decade later, western runners are dominating everything except the marathon.
Just to give you an idea of how far behind we were in training methodology, my teammate (NCAA XC champion Kenyan guy) ran about 70mpw (he was self coached, didn't do our weaksauce 50mpw high intensity interval workouts) and had two staple workouts he did every week: 8-10 repeat 1000s with 1:00 rest, and 16 x 400 with 0:30 rest. Basically the same format as the now-popular Norwegian Singles thread.
On the womens side, there is still a massive gap between the top africans (high 13s) and the top Americans (mid 14s), and I attribute this to a delay in when western female runners decided to throw out the old rulebook and start logging higher mileage or adding cross training like the men did. Western runners are rapidly closing the gap and within a few years will start mixing it up with the africans (Batocletti already doing so). If Josette Andrews is running 14:20s, it will not surprise me at all to see Jane progress to medal threat status down the road.
Lastly, I feel that Jane is just way ahead of her time. Put it into perspective: a sub 10:00 3200m is still a very rare time for high school girls and Jane ran 9:14. Nobody is that much of an outlier. Expect to be seeing a lot more girls run low 9:30s within a few years.
Nobody is that much of an outlier? I think Mary Decker would like a word…they do come along once in a very blue moon.
Other notable athletes who ran personal bests at age 19 include Chebet (14:46) and Gidey (14:45). Let's enjoy what we are witnessing here with Jane. It is remarkable.
That is some pretty heady company in which Jane finds herself…
