I’ve seen another source as well, so it’s probably fair to assume he did run XC at the Naval Academy. And it is a D1 school, so it is not a stretch to call it one. That’s like saying it’s “a stretch” to call a 5’5 man a man.
I played intermural basketball at my D1 school. Would you call me a DI basketball player? Plebe XC is not the same as being on the NCAA academy sports teams.
It was during a war 40 years before DI was established. It is a stretch.
Haven't read past the OP, so this might have been brought up already, but Jimmy Carter did pretty well for himself after his time with cross country at the Naval Academy.
Jimmy Carter had a powerful job but he wasn't successful at that job. He was possibly the worst person in history at that job.
Former University of Oregon Track athlete Chris Brewer who ran a 3:43 1500m and a 7:58 3,000m win's the World Series of Poker 250k Super High Roller and takes home $5,290,000 for his effort.
The thread about the guy wondering if he should go pro or not got me thinking. Are there any former D1 runners that found career success outside of running? Who has had the most? Someone I can think of is Mikel Jollett.
Sooo many PhDs, doctors, engineers, teachers, business people… you name it. Don’t confuse fame and wealth with success.
I didn't intend for this to be an argument, but just a discussion. I'd like to learn about people I may not have heard of too.
By any normal definition of “most successful,” it’s gotta be somebody quite old. The average 80-year-old has accomplished much more, cumulatively, than the average 30-year-old has. Think about all the teeth the future Dr. Yared Nuguse will fix in the next 50-60 years. Really, though, so many of the guys I went to school with, now in their early forties, are well on their way to doing great things. A Captain in the Army. A partner at one of the most prestigious law firms in the world. A Tony Award winner for a starring role in a Broadway show you’ve probably heard of. It’s not really fair to compare them to people who had a 40-50 year head start.
