This street track feels like an insult to the 5000 runners. Why would you have the DL championship in some weird novelty road race/indoor track hybrid environment? The outcome likely would have been different had this been in the proper venue.
But it begs the question, will Nike build an exact replica in Beaverton if this nonsense will continue every year?
No I totally agree - I wrote this after last years "experiment" and hoped it was just that. Outside of the World Champs final, this is supposed to be most prestigious 5000m race of the year and you put it on what is basically an urban XC course which isn't flat, has weird, potentially dangerous curves and above everything else robs these athletes of running in front of 25'000 fans in the best atmosphere in track and field. No wonder the fields are pretty average - if you are lucky like Jakob you can choose the 1500 but a lot of these guys don't have that choice. I'll never forget that EPIC DL final with Farah holding off all those guys basically diving at the line and wonder what it was about that, that they were like "nah let's go with this crappy street setup instead".
Not a fan of this, I hope the agents get together and force a change back.
What a WILD race. So much more interesting than a 400 meter track race but the lesson to be learned is the same as it on the 400 meter tracks - never do any of the work. My god I can't believe Aregawi finished that far back. He led the whole thing. Fisher was like dropped and 7th but somehow finishes 3rd. Aregawi leads the whole thing and then is a non-factor and finishes 5th. And Berega was sitting pretty in 2nd but ends up 7th.
Commentators were both spot on saying that Aregawi looked spent with one lap to go.
Commentators definitely did a wonderful job. Stuck up for the 5k runners/fans while their race was ignored for tamberis celebration (love the guy but why am I missing 6 minutes of the 5k to see that). They warned viewers about the bad weather and potential loss of coverage. They even did a good job of calling moves and trying to make the unique track understandable to the viewers. Great job.
Don't know how we're a power with one guy competing for a medal, we need multiple sub-13 guys at this point to get there. Could see it with Teare and Hocker, Klecker still is a question mark and Woody seems washed up (Grijalva should also be in this group...)

How can we save track & field?
I know! Let's just keep doing the same thing we've been doing!

Last year it worked well for Aregawi. same for his 3000 in monaco. conditions were very humid today
That track is garbage. What a poor decision, especially in the rain. On a real track (and with smarter positioning) Fisher could have challenged for the win.

I would love for Luis to be competing for the United States but he isn't a citizen.

are all very conservative. times are not everything. the runners get a lot from the crowd. the crowd enjoys this. this is fantastic

Not clear at all. Krop dropped, Fisher probably had a bit of heavy legs from Brussels.
Also this is what it is, it wasn't a surprise. it happens here for a a few years now

For now he sit on the chrono trials category. Great runners support all conditions.

If you think a novelty oversized track in the middle of Zurich is helping to save track and field then I have a novelty oversized track to sell you.
I'm all about experimenting and growing the sport, but not at the expense of a 5000 meter Diamond League final. Put together a 1000 or 3000 or some other non-DL event for this purpose, there are plenty of athletes still floating around Europe at the time of the season who would have jumped at that kind of an opportunity.
What did Marty Liquori say? Road racing is rock 'n roll; track is Carnegie Hall
When you force the two together, you are left with nothing but noise.
Enjoyed the race. Great win for Kimeli and reinforces my view that almost any of the top 10 guys in the world right now can finish second on the right day,

Can barely understand this but hes now gone 3rd, 2nd, 3rd in his 3 DL's this season, so I would say he is far more than a time trialer.
