If we were actually following the data and science and weren't selfish, we wouldn't allow Cole Hocker to get vaccinated now

Imagine you’re an athlete from a poor country with no access to vaccine going to the Olympics, worried about getting sick, and then you have a freaking entitled American athlete who knows more science than Einstein refusing to help STOP THE SPREAD.

It’s just pathetic. People do have too much freedom.

Didn’t he have COVID? If so, why would he get vaccinated? The whole point of a vaccine is to get immunity, and he’d have broader protection with having been exposed to the full virus. Not the ideal way of getting it, but if you have, the vaccine is unnecessary.

Rojo - Your post is probably the worst take I've ever seen by you or anyone on these boards. It's so bad, I'm actually still in shock after reading it. On top of that, you come on the thread here to basically say every healthy youth that received the vaccine just doesn't want to admit they are selfish by reducing the vaccine for the world's elderly.

This is now how it works. Just because someone in the US doesn't receive the vaccine, doesn't mean someone in another part of the world gets one. Do you have the education and brain of an 8 year old?

Also, if you speak to experts, doctors, and scientists...then you would know it's important we all are getting vaccinated. The vaccine is in large supply in the United States and there are currently not enough people getting it.

The Olympics can be a super spreader event. There are thousands of volunteers, there are people attending throughout the entire world, and Hocker being vaccinated does have an impact on other people.

But to be honest, I wasn't even one to insult Hocker at all. I didn't care that much. But your article is so bad that I'm concerned about your mental state.

rojo, Was this website not claiming that all Olympic athletes should be given priority access to the vaccine just a few months ago? We've known since last year that this disease mostly kills the elderly and those with comorbidities, and yet now when it's readily available, your opinion has changed? In January, the elderly should have been sacrificed for the Olympians (i.e. the young and healthy), but now they shouldn't be? I’m a physician that cares for patients with Covid at a university hospital in the USA. I have no political agenda about this issue.

The notion that eligible people getting the vaccine or not is some sort of zero sum calculation is absurd. Hocker declining the vaccine does not increase the availability of the vaccine for those more vulnerable. In the US there is a vaccine glut now and Hocker’s dose is not going to those in need in places without. Maybe that’s how it should work, but that’s not how it works.

The level of immunity to infection/reinfection is far superior in those with past infections AND vaccination as compared with past infection alone. For the delta variant, reinfection is more common in those with natural immunity (past infection) than in those who are vaccinated.

By forgoing vaccination Hocker puts himself a much greater risk for testing positive and missing the Olympics and for becoming infected and infecting others.

Does he deserve vitriol for not being vaccinated? Maybe not, but in no way was it a smart decision unless there’s some backstory unknown to the public.

Vaccinations are routinely required for the public for all sorts of reasons, such as attending school, military service, hospital employment. I think it would be reasonable to have set this as a requirement for being a member of the US Olympic Team with a waiver for certain circumstances or conditions.

This is another great point Rojo and friends ignore.

Hocker’s Olympics are OVER if he tests positive. Vaccines decrease that change. It’s just masochism to risk it at this point.

If Cole Hocker lived in a country with limited vaccine supply, or if there existed a mechanism by which vaccine rejected by Cole Hocker would instead be given to a vulnerable person on another country where supply is limited, then, I would agree with Rojo. However, unfortunately, for reasons completely outside of Hocker’s control, neither of those two things is true. Because of failures of national leadership and international coordination, vaccine sitting in freezers here in the USA will end up expiring and getting thrown away unless Americans use it. Given that unfortunate reality, Americans should f*cking use it.

I love how Rojo never responds to the people who absolutely destroy him in an argument, it's a good look Rojo.
