Seemed to work okay with using LA to replicate Rio conditions. Galen won there and medalled in Rio. Ward 6th in Rio. Then all 3 women in top 9 (moving up as dopers get pulled). So using a hilly course made sense for Tokyo before the Sapporo move.
i agree. rupp was playing with the field by doing repeated surges and then almost jogging to let them catch up. i was obvious by 15 miles that unless he got hurt it was game over. he is just in a completely different class, the kind of class it takes to medal in the olympics. on paper there are many runners with faster times in the world but there are not many that can beat him. his 10k and mile times are way better than 99.9% of the world's best marathoners. once he retires, it might be a very long time before another american can compete on the world stage at distance.

Everyone ran the same course under the same conditions and the cream rose to the top. The best won the race. If someone is being labeled as one of our "best runners" then they should have performed better on race day. That's why we have races not time trials. 'Erbody goes to CIM or Chicago and runs some blazing time then come race day on a real course people like us go "what happened?" when they "underperform".

Those athletes are all media/social media sensations. All of them are incredibly marketable in their own unique way. Running well had little correlation to social media or media likability.

That right there is why she didn't make the team. You cant go into a race like that with a contingency plan in case you are way outside the top 3. Not when you are one of the pre-race favorites. Don't give yourself an out of it start getting tough. Don't let yourself even consider that you might not finish top three. If things start going south, you push through them and get back on track. Or you completely blow up and legitimately DNF, none of planning to fail nanny-panny.

This thread has really gone off the rails.
I had Korir on my team but when I listened to his pre-race interview on LRC I him off. He didn’t sound confident and he sounded like he was still a track runner who isn’t fully committed to the marathon. That, in my mind, was the difference with 400 to go. He didn’t want it as badly. Huddle seems similar. She wants to figure out the marathon because she’s been up and down and hasn’t really nailed one yet, but her heart is still on the track. I think that’s her best event.
So it seems like Huddle had an injury.
What about the others? Fauble & Ward it seems just had bad days but after 4 pages this thread hasn’t fulfilled its purpose.
Any word on why Sisson and Hall dropped out?
I’ll af Chris Derrick and Andrew Bumbalough; why did they DNF?
I think among all top finishers Riley wanted to make it the most. Other 5 winners have a pro contract . And koror and des already made olympics and earns from their contract.
Riley knew if he lost today, he is done. He rejected a pro contract for this. This was do or die situation for him

Same feelings about Sara Hall. Back to back DNF's at the Trials because it didn't end well. Idk man, no other sport can you just walk off field/court/rink/field of competition because it's not panning out in your favor. Just not a fan at all of this entitlement approach. Unless something is seriously structurally wrong, you just don't quit because your feelings are hurt. It's hard to find sympathy in that.
It IS a business, too, man. Dropping out means a chance to use Trials fitness for a payday in a month or two, as a consolation.

Look at Rupps splits . His Almost jogging pace was still Sub 5 , even on the uphill sections. Plus his tactics . He was where he should be the first 10 miles. Behind a wall of front runners. I have no idea why sara hall, and sisson felt they needed to be at the very front the first 10.
Someone start a petition to get Derrick and Bumbalough, the two most likely to retire after a disappointing result, to race Boston and the 10,000 trials. This is the wrong way to end solid if not Rupp-level careers.

This is a bad plan. Those who succeed in these races are singularly focused on the task...NO MATTER WHAT! Most runners that I know that have a plan B...when the going gets tough...and it will...they take the plan B instead of stick it out!
Yes, I’m female. 5’10” and my weight hovers around 130-132. I’ve noticed many of the elite male runners are shorter than me though. Many of them in the 5’7”-5’9” range. Galen always stood out to me as one of the taller ones even though he isn’t *that* tall for a male in general.
I think shorter lighter women are more built for the sport than I am (5’4” and 110 lbs for example). But I’ve always been lean and smaller boned and can eat what I want so I’m not complaining too much about being tall. I do think it hurts me on hills though

These guys couldn't win if they were running in the 1980 trials when the top 3 all ran under 2:11 led by Tony Sandoval. That's how far we've come folks.
