They did their best!
They did their best!
White power!
Their best days are behind them. Flanagan can still go back to the track and go for AR's in the 5000 and 10,000 and grab another medal.
Goucher got a lot out of her limited talent. If she can handle the workload she might be best focusing solely on that from here on out and hit a 2:20 in the fall at a big race. Flanagan is still the best talent for the Americans in the 10,000 and should take that over and get her speed back and focus on that.

I do think Shalane would have been better served to run the 10,000 because I believe she could have medalled again, but that ship has sailed.
Really? I absolutely wanted her to medal again, but was she really capable of beating Vivian, let alone Vivian and Sally? (Obviously Dibaba was out of the question.) I'd say 4th/5th was much more reasonable if she trained for and ran the 10,000.

I don't come on here bashing athletes, men or women, but posters like you and Karen are just as bad as they are. You get your feeling hurt by a few post and want to blame EVERYONE on LR.
Go back to RW
The views of men represent the views of society, which, not surprisingly, represent the views expressed by the majority in this hell hole aka LRC. I don't allow my feelings to get hurt by men especially ones requiring remedial assistance like yourself.
I'll go back to RW when you rot in hell.
Oh you poor weak woman. So every man has the exact same views huh? How nice, I'm sure no man has ever helped you get to where you are in life (wherever the hell that may be).
Go for run and then burn your sports bra in protest.

Gold - Ethiopian

Run.
I watched it live on NBC. Flanagan gave everything she had. You could really see it when they did that last out-and-back turn around the blue cones where she could judge the gap. At that point she was still going for it, and paying for it. It actually hurt me to watch. The reason she finished 10th is because she was trying to medal. If she had been satisfied with an honorable 5th or 6th, it was hers.
I think every runner not in the lead group wanted/planned to do what Petrova did. Only Petrova had the legs though. Actually Petrova could have had silver if there had been only two runners in front of her! I don't think she could have outkicked Gelana, although it's possible. With four up front, though, she couldn't afford to be patient catching the leaders, and used too much energy. Sorry about the digression, back to the topic at hand....
NBC didn't show much of Goucher in the second half, but from what I did see her form was greatly improved over Houston. At the end she was fresher than Flanagan, but I'm guessing that's because at some point she was just trying to finish. I don't know what her ultimate potential is, but the future looks good.
Oh yeah, both of these women, as well as many of the other finishers, have done something no man will ever do: have a baby, then regroup and compete in the Olympics.
She did say it. It's on video all over the place. She said she loved making people hurt and that she had an ability to take her body to really painful places. The inference being that others couldn't. She's a great runner. However, she hasn't done anything in the marathon. 2:25 is 10 minutes away from the World Best. It's 6 minutes from the US Best. This was a very disappointing 2012 Olympics for the women US marathoners. There is no way around that.

What is wrong with that? Only Basketball players can talk?
And why was it a big disappointment? There were numerous women with faster personal bests than them. - 8 women under 2:20 when both the American girls' personal bests were 5 minutes slower at 2:25.
Time in Olympic race vs personal best.. Who really had a bad race?
Tiki Gelana-2:23:07/2:18:58
Priscah Jeptoo-2:23:12/2:20:14
Tatyana Arkhipova-2:23:29/2:23:29(was 2:25:01)
Mary Keitany-2:23:56/2:18:37
Tetyana Gamera-Shmyrko-2:24:32/2:24:32(was 2:24:46)
Zhu Xiaolin-2:24:48/2:23:57
Jéssica Augusto-2:25:11/2:24:33
Valeria Straneo-2:25:27/2:23:44

Payback for what Shalane did in the 10,000 at the Olympic Trials to help her BFF Lisa Koll make the Olympic team.

I think that with the way the race was run she could have been a factor and who knows what happens in the last lap?
I bet she wouldn't have finished 10th, that's for sure.
Def the two best looking in the race.
i was actually expecting kara to do really well just based on the great north run from a few yrs ago where she beat paula i just had a feeling that she might replicate that performance but i guess it wasn't meant to be the course was merciless i think the two of them were probably never in more pain.
Shalane is probably capable of a sub 220 on a good day and a fairly fast course, and is more than capable of hanging with all but one or two of the east africans in a championship race, but really hasn't looked the same since Beijing.
If people think Shalane and Kara underperformed, then consider how the Japanese must be feeling. Gold medals in 2000 and 2004 and they went into the race with two women that had run 2:23. Their highest finisher was 16th.
Decent run for Shalane and Kara on a course that seemed to cause quite a few to have problems with the slippery surface and tight turns.

I hate when men hating women play the victim card and project their hatred of men by go on and on about how terrible men are to women.
Women have it made: significant opportunities in school and sport. Ability to come in and out of the work force. Ability to stay at home if they wish.
My ex-wife once told me: "If a man is falsely accused of rape and goes to jail it's not a huge deal because so many other guys get off."
Society is created by men for men. Women have made significant inroads to secure their own freedom and voices (e.g., women's sufferage); however, there are still major inequalities and microinequities that hold women back from reaching their full potential as individuals and contributors. It is clear you resent the freedom women have secured for themselves. You, sir, are a barrier to women everyehere. Why am I not surprised to hear that you have an ex-wife?

Ahh, yes. The old resort to ad hominem attacks when you've lost the argument. The tried and true response of a liberal when they've nothing else to say.
You're everything I said you were and you've proved it by calling me names instead of rebuking my assertions.
Have a good day.
Has anyone considered the fact that they may have over-trained?
They looked fitter than all of the other runners.
The Africans looked toned and slim, while Shalane and Kara showed beautiful chiseled bodies. Maybe too much time in the gym along with 120-130 mile weeks.
