All talk and neither one delivered....especially Shalane. Neither one is a world beater. What should they both do now?

Continue to get paid a lot of money to run big marathons.
I imagine they can still earn an income by racing even though they are not medalists.
This is still their job.
I truly hated seeing Flanagan die over the last two miles. I have to admit, though, that after her recent stupid remark about how she enjoys making other people hurt in races, her finish today could be her comeuppance. Self-confidence is one thing. Bull-shit cockiness is not cool to me.
And just plain stupid for playing right into the Africans
hands.
Should have kept the pace honest from the get go.
I was really surprised that she tanked the last 3K, as she should have come in 5th, very disappointing.
I really thought that she could run a 2:21-2:22 in an even paced race.
Many times as we have seen good track times do not translate into good Marathon times.
Shalane prolly coulda gotten second in the 10k
They were all right, but they just didn't contend. I would have liked to see either of them cover the gap better or at least have a better last few miles when they didn't.
USA Women's Results after Joanie's win:
1988 17, 38, 39
1992 10, 12, 21
1996 10, 31
2000 19
2004 3, 34, 39
2008 27
2012 10, 11
I wouldn't rate 10 and 11 in the Olympics as disappointing.
She's good for 2:22 in the London Marathon but not that London course.
Is Shalane like the Ritzenhein of USA women's marathoning? Just that there is no female equivalence of a Ryan Hall to challenge her?

Are you serious? That was Uceny that said that at the track trials. Shalane said no such thing
otc fail
Keep racing like the both of them raced today. With the lead pack, aiming for the win. Dont over train. keep your head on straight mentally always believing that they can win. And there will be a few major marathon victories ahead for that pair.
I hate to see a runner go in with a gameplan that does not involve being amongst the contenders. occasionally it works but most of the time the winner comes out of the lead pack. As for getting passed by other runners at the end. Once the top 3 spots were gone, who cares where you finish?

Should have stayed with Jon Cook.
You are correct. What she actually said when she was running her mouth off was:
SF: Oh yeah. I just read something, I believe Edna Kiplagat, saying she can run 2:17 on the course. I kind of laughed; does she actually see the course? I expect the two of them to almost feel like it's their race to lose and that they are just going to press it and make it their own. I believe that they think that they deserve gold and silver right there.
And I also read that they think that the Ethiopians and the Russians are the other contenders. And I told Kara, "What are we, chopped liver?" It's fine by me if they think they're the favorites and so they're going to race like the favorites. That's cool.
Not that Edna Kiplagat should have said anything either...
Do you always play the fool?
All downhill after leaving ALSal.
Well she did beat Kiplagat by 2 minutes.
Interestingly enough, if you score the marathon like a 2 woman cross country race then the US would have placed 4th.
Kenya-6, Russia-12, Portugal-20, USA-22, Ethiopia-24

Wrong dude. She did say it. It's on video all over the place. She said she loved making people hurt and that she had an ability to take her body to really painful places. The inference being that others couldn't. She's a great runner. However, she hasn't done anything in the marathon. 2:25 is 10 minutes away from the World Best. It's 6 minutes from the US Best. This was a very disappointing 2012 Olympics for the women US marathoners. There is no way around that.
