So did McLain just run Benoit's winning time from 1983? (2:22.43) Impossible to compare those two races, as Benoit running mixed was dodging men slowing down all around her but could draft off of them too . . . weird coincidence.
Disappointing for Sara Hall who appeared to have a good build up? Would have expected her to be ahead of Des.
Emma Bates? According to our commentary she was claiming she could podium or maybe win it. I am a fan but she keeps over promising and under delivering. She may need to stop with the overly confident chat beforehand.
Yep I saw bates saying she could win it too...
It just makes her look silly when she then comes what 5th American woman? I shall look forward to her recaps to find out what went wrong.
She doesn’t need to claim that she will win it - she was never in 2.17 shape.
Bates barely edged out Des. Fails to meet her own hype yet again. No excuses this time…but I’m sure she’ll come up with one. I suspect she’s done with Joe Boss after this. She’ll need a few extra Modelos today.
I would kill to be able to run 2:26 in my 40s. Kudos to Des. Can be a bit much in the press sometimes, but no one can doubt her grit as a marathoner.
Des was amazing. Way to go out on a high.

Yeah I can’t believe anything Bates says anymore. Her last 4-5 marathons she’s talked about HUGE game and has not even come closer to delivering.

What do you expect her to say? She isn't running to win? She thinks she's in 27th place shape?
No but I don’t hear this talk from anyone else. They may have to believe they can win it but they don’t go around telling everyone.
As I said - I do like her and maybe she needs to do the confident talk as part of her prep. We need to learn to ignore it in future. Even the commentator sounded bemused.
Sometimes it’s best to surprise people - like McClain.
Really dumb question- why did they have the winner go to one side of the finish line and then directed the rest to the other? Conner looked like he was driving to where the winner had just finished and then suddenly was forced to go right. Don't think he'd have beat them there but that was rather odd. Is that the norm?

When Benoit ran that, it was faster than the WR at the time. McLain is nearly 13 minutes off the current WR

The separate finishes have been in place for a long time - recall Kawauchi not realizing he had won until he was directed to the left, as he had been told the winners go to the left at the start. All the racers know this in advance. Now the question of whether the runners behind the leader should be allowed into the winning chute if its close - that is a different story. You couldn't really tell by the angle of the camera if they were truly close. Its kind of a judgment call for the officials. They should have done a better job directing the 2nd group to the right if they didn't want them to follow Korir all the way.
I'm assuming that these fast times, including Mantz's, have something to do with a tailwind? Was there, in fact, a tailwind? When Hall ran that superfast race some years back, there was a notable tailwind.
