Korir in for the win in 2:04:45, fading a bit to win by 19 seconds, the second quickest winning time, as Alphonse Simbu beats CyBrian Kotut in a sprint finish for second both finishing in 2:05:04, with Mantz just off the podium and best time for an American in a big pb of 2:05:08
think Korir 'faded' cause he wasn't really kicking at the end while the chase group were all kicking for the podium
Really dumb question- why did they have the winner go to one side of the finish line and then directed the rest to the other? Conner looked like he was driving to where the winner had just finished and then suddenly was forced to go right. Don't think he'd have beat them there but that was rather odd. Is that the norm?
Yes that’s the norm at most majors now. I hate it and it’s unnecessary
I think Mantz' performance is also an auto-qualifier for the 2025 WC, right? Is Boston considered a Platinum Label marathon?
("As was the case for the last World Championships, the top five finishers at Platinum Label marathons and winners of individual events at area championships (except for the marathon), regardless of marks, will be considered as having achieved the entry standard.") -

Can someone who follows the sport more than me explain to me what's happened with this seemingly massive gender reversal in US marathoning? It felt like a few years ago, women like Seidel, Sisson, Bates, etc. were poised to be legit world competitors, and the men were lackluster. Now we've got, what, 4 US men finishing in the top 10 today and no US women even in the top 15? Mantz and Young way outperformed the women at the Olympics too. What's going on here, or am I off?
I'm assuming that these fast times, including Mantz's, have something to do with a tailwind? Was there, in fact, a tailwind? When Hall ran that superfast race some years back, there was a notable tailwind.
It looks like minimal wind. Perfect conditions outside of a tailwind, an honest first half and better shoe tech I think explains a 2:04:45. The top 3 are all 2:03 capable and I think Mantz now is too.

Global women leveled up leaving the Americans in the dust, global men times are relatively constant but American men are inching closer.
Yeah, American women went from training for a podium to training for Instagram. More interested in being "boss" women and writing 15 page race recaps. It's the same old story from the past few years. Lots of talk about being in sub 2:20 shape and then fading on race day.
At 39K Sharon Lokedi and Obiri have broken away from Yehualaw as they are well under course record pace coming through 24 miles in 2:17:48 pace, well under 2:19:59 record.
