I call BS on this. You lived 20-ish miles away in South San Jose, so Almaden? Santa Teresa? Regardless, it doesn't take 2.5 hours to get to Palo Alto from there at 6am. If you said it happened once or twice, I'd believe you. But if you really left at 6am you'd get there in 45-60 minutes tops.
I’ll also call BS on the 2.5 hours from S. San Jose to Stanford... unless from “tried Cal Train, 101, 280, 85, El Camino, riding my bike” you meant you biked up the Cal Train tracks, then biked from 101 to 280, then from 280 to 85, then some how got on El Camino and went north to Stanford, all on your bike.... I can see that taking 2.5 hours
I don’t know what to tell you. I lived off of 85/101 in Santa Teresa area. I left the house around 6 am. Hit the on-ramp light, gridlock to 17. Opened up for a 1/2 mile and gridlock again. Crawled to 280. Go and slow in 280. I’d get in 8-8:30 am daily.
That was June to August of 2017. Tried Cal Train. Drove to light rail, took it to downtown. Waited 10-15 min for the train. Then grabbed the shuttle to campus or even walked sometimes.
You don’t have to believe me, I lived it. Have you done this commute? I have. It took 2-2.5 hours. 2.5 was standard door to door.
Thus I looked for another job and moved on.
