Meb is a 9 on the GOAT scale. Literally only an OG Gold could improve his stature. A win of ANY MAJOR RACE at all would be a step up for Rupp. That leaves a lot of room. He's a soft 7 on the GOAT scale, just ahead of Ryan Hall due to consistent domestic wins and time-trial record.

I've got no argument agains the idea that Rupp has not won a major race, but I've read this statement many times about the "watered-down" competition of the London 10km. Weren't the best runners in the world in that race? Wasn't the world record holder in that race? (Yes, you'll tell me he wasn't 100% - but he was, in fact, the WR holder, correct?) A silver in the Olympics - in the "African era" is an exceptional achievment.
When Shorter won the marathon in '72 the Africans had barely come on the scene; I don't consider his victory watered-down in any way as he beat the best that the world had to offer on that day; Galen beat all but one in 2012 - and the level of competition in 2012 is FAR greater than it was in 1972.
Meb's Athens medal is also a phenomenal achievement and his major marathon performances also give him great value in this discussion, but I simply don't believe that Meb's medal trumps Galen's medal - just because YOU say the competition was watered down.
What you fail to recognize is that the "African era" in the 10,000 had been over for years.
The best don't even bother with the track 10,000. It's a "B" event like doubles tennis. Move all marathon prizing to the 2016 Rio 10,000 and tell me where Rupp places.

Being the world record holder is irrelevant if he wasn't in world record shape. The competition was weak and has been ever since about 2010. That is a fact. There is no "Africa era" in the 10000. In all of the other events, sure, but not the 10000. Arguably not even so much in 5000.

No, I was there that day when Ryan Hall ran what *I* think was his greatest race, and better than Rupp's.....his win at the trials in 2007. Considering the hills in CP, Ryan's race was spectacular.
In the Olympic Games it will be over 80 degress. If you look back at 2012 race it was ran in 207. 2 of the runners that were first and third havent done much since. I think Rupp has great talent. But far to young to step up to the marathon at 24. He thinks he can double and recover in just a short period of time to run against Kenyans and Ethiopians that destroyed Mo Farah at the Marathon in London. I hope he doesnt cause himself to get permanent injuries and loose his chances at being great when he turns 30.

No the best. Steve Spence's Bronze Medal run at the 91 WC in Tokyo was far more impressive than Rupp's Trials win.
