Rupp either got trapped in front and slowed down to try to get someone to pass him. He had not takers.

Or, Rupp intentionally ran to the front to intentionally slow the pace down because he knew he did not have a great race in him.

Do people really think that he "went for it?" 7:45 isn't blazing fast; it's right on PR pace. He should have been able to hold it; the man ran 13:01 indoors which required a lot of solo pushing.

My impression was that, after the pacer dropped off, he slowed the pace down on purpose (to slower than his 10K pace), because he wanted to save for a kick. Then, he couldn't keep up with the surge with 500m to go, so he threw in the towel on the last lap.

Even if he was tired, I have a hard time believing he could only muster a 65 if he was trying his absolute hardest. He could have done at least a 62, but there was no point if not going to finish in the top 3. It's not like he was going at 12:40 pace; it was right at PR pace for him AND he slowed it down, so he could only do a 65? Not likely.

I don't see it as Rupp going for the record. He followd the pacer, but then slowed it down on purpose to work on more of those "tactics." It's a shame, because he fought for those indoor records. I wish he did it for outdoors as well. The only reason he got the 10K record was because of Sambu. He wouldn't have pushed on his own.

Rupp slowed the pace down as soon as the last of the pacers dropped out. At more than one point he was clearly looking for someone else to take the lead. No shame in any of that. But the notion that he "went for it" does not seem to match the race. At best he had a plan to "go for it" but then felt like shit when he had the lead (hey, we all have off days) so he started looking for an exit strategy.

Here is my reasoning.

Bob Kennedy

400 - 54 seconds at the end of a workout

1500 - 3:38.2

Mile - 3:56.21

3000 - 7:30.84

5000 - 12:58.21

Galen Rupp

400 - 50 seconds at the end of a workout according to Alberto

1500 - 3:34.75, also 3:34.78i en route to a 3:50.92 mile...

Mile - 3:50.92i

3000 - 7:30.16i

5000 - 12:58.90

Galen is much faster than Bob in terms of speed and his under distance PRs reflect that. Despite this, Bob is just behind Galen by 3000m, and is slightly ahead at 5000m.

Because he has much slower speed that Galen, the quality that allowed him to run the times he did at 3000m / 5000m was his amazing speed endurance. Bob's times slow down less than Galen's as distance increases.

Part of that reason is likely because he spent the winters focusing on endurance and running cross country, whereas Galen often tries to run very fast at Mile - 5000m.

As pointed out above, the trend shows that if Bob were to have run a 10,000m at his peak (around the time he ran his 3000/5000 PRs), he would have a better 10,000m PR than Galen.

According to my calculations:

50 > 3:35 > 7:30 > 12:58 > 26:22

a) I have 2 young kids and have spent/am spending more time with them than my wife, and probably more time with them than 90% of parents. Yes, it's tiring, but...

b) I never said having twins couldn't exhaust you *IF* you were being woken up by them all the time and taking for them all the time.

HOWEVER...if you really think Rupp is playing Mr Mom, you're nuts. He's a professional runner, probably the highest paid distance runner in US history, and Salazar and Rupp together leave no stone unturned and nothing to chance. If you really think Rupp, the guy who has been practically living in a bubble for the last 10 years, is waking up at all hours of the night to give them a bottle, again, you are ignorant. Now yes, I could be wrong (show me if so), but I feel pretty certain his wife and/or nanny or grandparents are doing the lion's share of the parenting at the moment. he will have an offseason, and his career will only be a few more years. He will have plenty of time to do his Daddy duty. But I bet you that now is not really his time to do an equal share.

Viewed the tape a couple of times. Its easy to see that the african's were just following Rupp , he was slowing the field down , they were stumbling over each other. If they would have went from a mile out we might have seen sub 12:50.

9 second pick up over Rupp in the last lap , he clearly has some work to do if he plans on running with these guys for the balance of the track season.

The other runners seem to be on to Rupp's game: sit-and-kick.

The workaround is: force Rupp into the lead.

Rupp clearly does not know how to lead a race against the top runners, and stay within a few seconds of them at the end. Salazar has some work to do, but Rupp is 28 and the lead-and-kick work should have been done years ago.

That's some strange logic. Kennedy ran his 3000m PR of 7:30.84 in 1998; he ran 13:03.57 for the 5000m that year. A year later he ran 7:32.55, less than two seconds off his 3000m PR, and his 10000m that year was 27:38.37, equating to a lap slower than Rupp's 10000m AR.

It may be too early to move to the marathon by 2016, but unless Nike pulls some strings, the 5000m is not likely a podium spot for Rupp. The objective now is to be time-trialing for the AR. Bekele, Tergat, Farah, Gebrselassie all were 28 or younger when they ran their 5000m PR's.

making the claim that Rupp is not doing much helping out at home and then asking for proof if someone thinks otherwise ("show me if so") is disingenuous at best. How many parents post their waking-up-in-the-middle-of-the-night-chore schedule?

Whatever the precise cause, he's obviously not in peak shape. He looked much better during the indoor season and earlier this year. I have a hard time imagining that the control freak coach you describe would plan on peaking for the weeks after the guy had twins. Seems more likely he had contractual performance requirements that had to be met, but what do I know.

12:58 requires some combination of speed/endurance.

Bob had 54 second 400 ability. He was not fast.

Galen has much better 400 ability than Bob did. His under distance PRs & is ability to close slow races reflect that.

Bob's ability to run a faster 5000 than Galen sure as hell didn't come from his under distance ability, i.e., Said Aouita running 12:58 & having 3:29 1500 ability.

It had to come from somewhere. If it didn't come from speed, well, there aren't too many more possibilities...

The logical conclusion to draw is that Bob had better speed endurance than Galen.

You think because he ran 27:38 for 10k the same year he ran 7:32 means that he doesn't have better speed endurance than Galen?

Well, Bob ran even faster over 10,000m in 2004, running 27:37. Less than 2 weeks before that he ran 5000m in 13:27.

Clearly the 27:38 10k you refer to means nothing when analyzing his true ability. He never took the 10k seriously at his best, meaning "going for it" in a zurich, cool evening, fast pace, rabbits, type setting.

Obviously tactics greatly fit into finishing times; much less so if time-trialing. But the comparison I made is a lot less preposterous than your claim based on what you think his training consisted of. Unless Kennedy actually posted a 26:44, it is silly to claim he would be holding the AR if he had only gone for it.
