In the immortal words of Hobbs Kessler "I don't think anything over 7:30 is fast"
When you have people saying it's the greatest indoor field of all time going after the WR, and then they run that much slower - people are going to be disappointed. It's not like the finish was blazing either. People have run faster final 400s while running 7:17
It wasn’t fast but it was good racing and Hocker ran 13.29 last 100 which is an important data point. All the guys were trying to time it right, reminded me of the Worlds 5,000 which I also enjoyed. So no Grant was a bummer but still a good race, if not completely up to the hype.
Agreed. When Fisher withdrew from the race, expectations about sub-8 needed to change.
I enjoyed different guys jockeying for position and taking the lead after the pacer dropped out. Five different guys held the lead after that point: Samuel, Blanks, Kerr, Wolfe, and Hocker. I found it exciting!
Once again, Hocker gets himself trapped in lane 1 which he does in most of his races. And rather than accept his mistake, he makes contact with Wolfe and Blanks at 7:26 to try to force his way out. Wolfe was passing on the outside of lane 2 and was absolutely not crowding Hocker. Blanks nearly went down when he was tripped from behind.
I am so tired of seeing this crap from Hocker. He even acted like he was being persecuted in interviews when he got DQ'd at Worlds. I can't wait to see someone get tired of his nonsense and faceplant him.

Why couldn’t the 1500m world champ or 5000m world champ take on the pace? I thought they were interested in attacking the WR, but as soon as Fisher scratches all bets are off? Funny how that works…

You don’t think Hocker would have raced differently?
In a race paced by Ingebrigtsen after the rabbit drops out, Hocker has never beaten him. In such a race, if Hocker wants to win, his only available strategy is to maintain contact, and in a sub-7:20 race he won’t be able to do so.

Because they were there to win the race, not chase after the world record. Go back and watch the athlete interviews in the weeks and days leading up to the race. I didn't see any of the guys say their mission was to break the WR, as Kerr did prior to the 2024 edition of Millrose. This year, they were talking about wanting to win, and they said a WR might come in the process.
There's a big difference between saying, "This is a WR attempt" and "It might take a WR to win this race." In the former, the focus is on time. In the latter, the focus is on winning. These guys wanted to win more than anything. If that meant running fast, they were prepared to do that, but running fast would have only been the means to their end goal of victory.
With Fisher out, Hocker and Kerr didn't need to run sub-8 to win the race. Taking the lead at sub-8 pace would have hurt their chances. They did what they thought gave them the best chance to win. Considering they finished 1-2, it's hard to argue against their strategy.

We should probably not forget the Olympic 1500 final.
