Runners do care, and I'm assuming runners are the target audience for shoe companies selling running shoes. Oiselle is a relatively small clothing company, but they became very popular among girls and young women when they signed Lauren Fleshman and Kara Goucher. Maybe women care more than men. I don't know. But I'm certain that many of the women runners I know are more likely to buy from companies that sponsor athletes that they like.
