We also will be doing a live watch praty and reaction show starting 5 minutes before the race (so 1:55 pm ET) and then going on for as long as we need to afterwards:
The randoms at my gym were talking about it this morning, so I think mission was accomplished in terms of the average person getting to know who Faith is. They don’t understand running anyway so to them 4:06 is probably super close. These are people who swear that they know someone running 4 min miles on a 10% incline so yeah, the average person is clueless.
This.
The goal was stated as sub-4 but the real goal was attention for Nike. And honestly it worked, cuz I’m seeing it all over the internet
I'm not sure you know how marketing works. They got plenty out of this and didn't lose it all because she didn't break 4.
Of course I do! Breaking 2:00:00 made me along with every runner on the planet want a pair from Nikes marathon super shoe line. This stunt doesn’t sell me or probably any other track athlete anything Nike related. Maybe I’m missing something but I can not feasibly see how this is going to make a profit for Nike.
It brought the brand into the conversation again. That’s how. Doesn’t even matter who the athlete is/how they did, we r all talking about it.
'I cannot' is right. Whilst I don't agree with the whole sentiment of their post, why are people so happy she failed. I get it, we hate Nike for being an abomination that drains our sport, but I was really rooting for Faith to get close. Maybe we do deserve a failing sport if this is the reaction of the most diehard fans to an attempt like this.
Not sure why all the downvotes on this. Faith haters? Nike lovers?
According to IAAF scoring tables, comparing 1mile equivalent 1500m time to 800m:
Women's 1500m 3:42.20 1413 800m 1:50.35 1413
Men's
1500m 3:42.20 1136 800m 1:46.05 1136
So if we expect women to be able to run 1 mile under 4 minutes, should we not also be expecting them to run sub 1:50 800m ?
a 146 flat is much much better than a 342.
a woman with aerobic and 151 800 has a shot at sub 4, barely under most perfect of conditions.
Yes, true, but if such a woman existed, I would also expect women who are 800m specialists to exist who can run faster than 1:51. The comparison isn't to show what kind of 800m runner can run a 4 minute mile, but to show what an 800m runner looks like who is of equivalent talent to a 4 minute mile runner. I would say that such an 800m runner is sub 1:50.

I for one didn't want to be negative, but holy God how much more could they insult us? At 400m, both announcers immediately switched to unbridled excitement that she might "get this WR." Never mentioned sub 4 again. It was supposed to be sub 4, not a WR, that btw was not a WR. Nike got what they wanted. About 99% of the lay public comments during and after the race were congratulations for the WR. Wtf?
And by the way stop comparing it to kipchoge, he only need to take off a couple seconds per mile she was trying to take off a couple seconds per lap. Was never going to happen physiologically. I suppose I can't blame her she got paid.
1.) As expected, for track we are at a limit right now: Prototypes not significantly better then the off the shelf victory 2/Drafting & Aerodynamics not as important (or different to a normal race with pacers...)
2.) Nike might use this to market a new sports bra and make it worth it for them, this obviously was a stunt and I can hardly believe that everyone into the science seriously thought this was even remotely possible. With Breaking 2 they had such a huge jump with shoes they clearly knew there was a high chance to make a serious move forward. This time was different in pre event marketing and also the whole setup.
Flop. 2.7% off sub 4. That’s not even close. We were sold a gimmick and like the lemmings we are we gobbled it up.
I said 404 all along. Boy Carl Lewis and company were shouting sunshine and positivity before that race as we knew they would. Nothing against Faith she is incredible but no woman on earth can break 4 flat in the mile...for the next several years at least

Nike really dropped the ball on this one... it was nothing short of a dumpster fire of an event. Faith, poor thing, was high as a kite and she couldn't even break 4 even with illegal shoes and being doped to the gills.
So THAT's why Craig Engels was jumping in some random heats at the Portland Track Festival two weeks ago--getting in some pacing practice for Breaking 4!
I think woman's track and field would be better served by selecting a 4:00 equivalent for female athletes and showing as much enthusiasm for them when they break it as we have done for male athletes over the past several decades when they break 4.
She runs a 4:06 and the comments are as expected for Let's Run. You people really are sh!t human beings and deserve a dying sport. Nothing anyone does makes you happy unless they fail at it, and then you act like you won the lottery. I hope there is a hell because you all deserve to spend eternity there.
You suck.
Letsrun: Predictably making fun of goofy, although admittedly very entertaining, marketing stunt
Nike Interns and r/AdvancedRunning users: "Not on my watch! This was transformational for the sport!"
These people are hopeless. I guarantee half the people on r/AdvancedRunning spend a lot of their time raging about "capitalism," but then they go and slurp up stuff like this.
